• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The efforts of nearly a years worth of work is nearly complete. The only thing I am unhappy with is the nighttime frame hit and, really, the overall frame hit as well but I guess thats to be expected with such a large airport.

Aiming for a Jan 07 release for FS9, hopefully sooner. Waiting on the ground poly issue to be resolved for an FSX release.

Some of these are quite dated, but others are more recent. Enjoy :)

Lots of little details to be added(fences, vehicles, generic buildings, approach lighting objects, etc), but I think its far enough along for screenies.

Looks good!! How did you place the jetways? Are they library objects?

Kind of, but not really! They are all unique so they all have their own GUIDs and mdls. I placed them by hand writing an xml which calls all of the GUIDs and places them at their proper lat/long. I suppose I couldve made them all library objetcs and placed them with Rwy12 or Arnos wonderful Objectplacer_xml, but that seemed like an unecessary step.

About the jetways, they are modelled in 5 LODs which is apparent in the third picture.

I saw the lods. I would think those would help some and I'm sure they do. Where do you get your reference pictures for the airport? Did you make your own textures? Is everything in the scenery custom made by you? Do you have a website? I'd like to talk further with you.

Really looking nice. Can't wait to see more.

I'm glad, I'm not the only one to use no libs for the jetways. First, I wanted to use one different model for each jetway I need to place, but now I'm using different variations for the different types. Placing them by hand was really a pain....

Once again: Nice work.

I know you have the new Runway at KATL too. Looking great.

Like KATL, KSTL has a new runway, and I'm presently working on it...it's nothing as advanced as your scenery, as I am not using custom gates or buildings but I did have to completely redesign the taxiways and taxiway network, to take into account the new runway.

I noticed the nice cursive AirTran logo on a jetway. I guess, you had to model each airline's logo on each jetway. Or least on the jetways that HAVE an airline label on them. :)

Thanks Daniel. Your approach is basically the one I used. I have 3 different "head" heights with 3 different swing angles, combined with 3 different overall lengths(with slight diferences in the telescoping), that combined with the air conditioning configurations, logos, and of course gate numbers - I ended up having 100+ unique mdls :D

Agree about placing them by hand but in the case of ATL, the concourses all face 0 degrees true north, so each side of each concourse has the same longitude. That made things go a little quicker. But still a big pain :)

Yup, I just used an extra poly on my gmax jetway for the logos(and all except the DL logos use transparency).

I didnt do all the logos, just AA, UA, NW, DL, AT, US, CO...
The gate assignments in concourse D are always changing, so I left a few blank ;)

Sparkchaser,

I registered just so I can tell you that that is what heck of a good looking scenery. I fly on Vatsim and Delta virtual and have been wanting a good KATL for years. I must say your shots look outstanding! This looks to be the best rendition ever of ATL. Only thing I could wish more for would be a static aircraft package for us online flyers but I know thats asking a ton. Excellent work, cannot wait to get my hands of this beauty.

Hey Spark.

I'm sorry. The skids are very similar but I trust you are capable of producing them yourself.
Our textures get ripped off so often I'm trigger happy.

Good luck n' sorry again

ps. The FPS is taking a hit because you are using XML & GUIDs. Good old fs2002 makemdl can handle about 5x the geometry over the poorly written FS9 & FSX XML driven SDK stuff.

Hi again George, no worries! I am actually somewhat flattered because I didnt think the skid masks even came close to yours :D

About the GUID frame hit. I figured that out the hard way after placing 2000+ trees(darn autogen excludes) as library objects. Needless to say, I've uprooted all 2000 and I'm exploring better methods of exporting my large areas to recover some of the autogen. What a drag!

Thanks Eric. There wont be any static aircraft, but once I do the AFCAD file, the airport will be populated!

Your welcome to use our crappy static planes.

Eric loves them :)

Thank you kindly for the offer George. I was thinking about making some simple planes for my hangars, just to make them a little more lively. Since the hangar doors are animated with the "minute of the hour" condition, I cant park the AFCAD planes in there as they'll appear to slice right through the hangar doors, if they're closed. So, I may take you up on the offer :D

Yes I do George.;)

Sparkchaser...the new screenies look dang good...this is going to be a sure winner. I really liked how you had the trees..I hope you can find a way to get them all back into the scenery without it being too much of a FR hit.

Once again:

Nice screens. But let me ask one question if I may: I noticed this "special look" on some of your buildings I'm trying to create since I made the first textures for Frankfurt.

Especially the building textures on these screens:

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4218/atl2gu2.jpg
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/1520/atlmz6.jpg
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/7365/atl7sp4.jpg

I can't describe it. It's just this special look. I think it's a bit like soft watercolors. Did you use special filters to get this?

Thx for your reply and keep up the nice work.

Thanks Daniel. I use alot of psd layers at less than 100% opacity. Typically for a building - I'll have a base color template at 100%, a dirt/waterstain layer at about 30-50% opacity, a detail layer(this may be a base concrete texture, brick texture, or a vinyl-type paneling, lines, cracks, etc..) at around 20-50%, and finally a few third party filters like Alien skin Xenofex and Eyecandy for general hue/saturation clouds, or even vertical/horizental grain or general noise.

I cant remember which one has the bricks filter - but its great. You can size, color and pattern the bricks the way you want, but I would recommend using much less than 100% opacity for the softness you taked about...I also fudge with the master RGB levels in photoshop to either sort of washout a texture or make it very sharp if thats the look I'm aiming for...hope this helps :)

Sparkchaser,
Like Eric, I registered here just to reply to this post.

Man, finally a great looking KATL for FS9! :D As someone who grew up in ATL and worked under A concourse and on the Ramp for Delta back in the mid 90's, it's wonderful to see a detailed version of Hartsfield-Jackson. Love the raised concourses, A-spine openings, and concourse windows.

I see that you are going to release your scenery soon and had a few questions regarding the package that hopefully you can tell us.

What features are incorporated in the KATL scenery? Are there vehicles (i.e. moving vehicles) and/or animated jetways, marshallers? What kind of goodies can we expect? Don't mean to pry, but just excited over this release.

Thanks for your time and any info would be great.

@sparkchaser

Thx for your explenation. I'll give it a try. But I'm glad you understood, what I meant (Wasn't really sure of my discription :D ).

How long have you been working on KATL till now?
