• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Custom textures for landclass?

Messages

Hi

I created 1024x1024 DXT1 Bmps with Mip mapping (same format as default landclass textures)

Now how do I create a blending mask for each (any specific name for the file) and where do I put the textures to become a landclass I can use in tiling (i.e: in SBX)

Any tutorial ?

Thanks
Michel

There are a couple ways to use the texture:

1) simply overwrite the default texture in Scenery>World> Texture (backup first!)

2) Create your own landclass file and put in an Addon> MyScenery> Scenery folder. Then place the custom texture in the corresponding Addon> MyScenery > Texture folder (note, you will need a raster landclass for the texture to show)

Note: If you use the second method, you will need to ensure ALL the textures from the set are within that folder otherwise you will get memory leaks.

Blend masks- Download Holgers landclass spreadsheet for information on these work. You don't need to make your own- It will just use a default one related to the landclass your texture is being called by.

Thanks so much for the information

Now I think that by creating my custom landclass textures, I presume I can't use SbuilderX or any other visual design tool to put my custom landclass tiles right?

If I can't use a visual program then how do I make FSX understands taht for a specific tone of grey in my raster file , the texture should be a specific custom one I created. Is it wiby naming the custom lc texture file properly to match a name of a default one I need to replace?

Thanks again
Michel

holgers spreadsheet also describes between each landclass type (i.e. each grayscale value which gets compiled into the landclass values) and their textures- Some textures are shared between different landclasses.

Note that Holgers only describes one region in FSX, yours may be different but it is a good start.

What I am not able to know is how to tell the raster file to use my custom textures and not FSX defalut textures? I mean how to make the raster file understand that my custom texture corresponds to a specific grey value?

I placed the texture in the addon scenery/Myscenery/texture

Thanks again!

Hi fellow Canuck ;-)

all you need to do is give your custom textures the same names as the corresponding default textures called by your land class file. With your compiled land class file in the /Myscenery/scenery folder it will first look for textures in the /Myscenery/texture before searching in Scenery\World\texture. Thus, your custom textures will be used while classes without corresponding custom textures will continue to use the default textures.

In FS9 there was a bug using this approach that led to OOMs if the texture folder didn't contain a complete set of custom textures called by the land class .bgl but in FSX that's no longer the case.

Cheers, Holger

Thanks fellow for your explanations ;)
I did rename one texture with the same name as a default one but did never show up.I will give this another try with more textures renamed.
Cheers!
Michel

Any step by step tutorial about doing this with FSX KML or some freeware tool? I have just realized most of my country appears like a big plain when in fact it has lots more of trees!

so, anyone there?im working in this, but im in the same situation, no custom or modified textures show up.

That would mean you have done something wrong. But you have not listed what you have done. so there is no way to know what needs to be corrected.

indeed....my fault.Fsx autumn begin in october and ending the same month, thats why my autumn texture dont show up in november...all right now, sorry.
