Terrain Mesh
Hello, I have found some terrain mesh that is 90m resolution I have got this into geotif format and then used the Flight Simulator X SDK using the resampler tool to convert it from geotiff to bgl.
Then placed the bgl into the Flight simulator X addon scenery and then scenery folder, ran Flight Simulator X and viewed the new terrain data. However in places there are massive holes in the ground and giant towers that shouldn't be there. I know it isn't a problem with the acual geotiff data that I downloaded due to I have gone over it with a program and it all is right, so it must be a problem some were in the compiling or Flight Simulator X itself. Can any one please help me on how to fix this problem? Thanks. Last edited by e.rossiter; 19-03-2010 at 21:32. |

Here are two examples of what it does:

In my workings with the Resample tool I have found it to be very good at what it does. All a compiler will do is take the data given, convert and compress, then make into a BGL file. Kudos to Doug Matthews for a job well done on Resample.
I don't know the source of your 'source' or the conversion tool that you are using to make into a GeoTiff. It should allow you to zoom into those areas and see if there are any discrepancies in the data. Almost always what you are seeing is the GIGO situation; garbage in, garbage out. |

The source I downloaded I looked all over it and it was all fine I even looked at it in 3D and it looked brilliant. The program I am using to convert it to geotiff is Global Mapper 11.

I have to agree that it looks like bad data. Not exactly sure how fs deals with it, but I suspect a single bad point will cause a spike, whereas looking with GM might average things out more. In GM you can clamp the max and min elevations values, or set all values outside the valid range to some other value and I bet if you did that, the spikes would go away.

I managed to fix the problem what was happening is that I was placing it in addon scenery under scenery, and it was conflicting with the default terrain.
So to fix it I placed in under a different folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\BASE\Scenery which has solved the problem and now looks great. Thanks everyone for your input. |
