    Hi Arno

I am thoroughly enjoying your ModelconverterX program and visit regularily for any updates.
It really is an incredible tool with many uses. Thankyou.

Currently I'm trying to use it to convert my FSDS projects into GMAX by converting MDL's to 3DS and importing ito Gmax I keep all maps and materials as previously lost by converting with the CVA convertor.
I am able to open the 3DS files in other viewers such as Accutrans, but when I attempt to import a 3DS file created by ModelconverterX into Gmax I get an "Improper file Format" warning and cannot import into Gmax.

Am I doing something wrong and is there a workaround.

Thanks for such an incredible tool Arno

    Best wishes

    Gary

    Hi Gary,

Does this happen with all 3DS files you tried or only with some? Some time ago I came across such a problem myself when importing a 3DS and there it only seemed to happen for complex objects. I still have to debug where some limit might have been reached.

But if you have the problem also for simple objects it might be something else. Maybe you can send me MDL and 3DS file for debugging?

These are complex objects Arno, I'll try some simpler ones and see if it's the same results.
It happens for all I've tried.

What I do for a workaround is open it in Accutrans and save it back as a 3DS, what I did notice is that when I save it back from accutrans, the files size of the .3DS reduces dramatically !!
But I can then open it in Gmax only with the loss of smoothing, but thats OK.

Thanks again for ModelconverterX Arno, it really is an incredible tool.

    Best

    Gary

    More Improper File Format

    Hi Arno,

I know this is an old thread but I am having the same problem with the Improper File format warning when trying to import my "dungeness lighthouse" to gmax. It has >10,000 triangles and >7000 vertices.
I am using the latest version of ModelConverterX. Fantastic program by the way. Thanks for all you do.

I don't have the Accutrans program.
    Are there any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Alan

    Hi Alan,

If it does not have over 30000 triangles and vertices it should still work.

Maybe you could send me your object? Then I might be able to debug the issue.

    Hi,

Which version of ModelConverterX are you using? I converted the object with the latest development release and I can load it into GMax.

    HI,

    I have version 1.2.0.0.
Also, I am using Windows 7 - 64 bit if that makes any difference.
I ran both programs using the "run as administrator" selection.

    Thanks,
    Alan

    Hi Alan,

Try to download the latest development release of version 1.3, it has many improvements. Fixing this 3DS bug is one of them :).

Windows 7 64 bit is no problem, I use that as well.

    Hi Arno,

I downloaded the 1.3 version but still no joy.
It works on less detailed buildings but not this one for
    some reason.

    Thanks for a great program.

That's weird, since I could convert and import the building you send me without problems on my PC. Or is it another building that does not work now?

Same building. Keeps giving me the "improper file format" error.
I can use the mdl file but I wanted to upgrade it in gmax.

    It's a puzzle all right.
    I'll keep trying though.

    Thanks,
    Alan
