• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Smoothing Cliffs?

Hello, Newbie here and sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but.......!
I'm flying from an airfield which doesn't sit well in Horizon photo scenery with P3D V3 It has sharp cliffs all around which on one side isn't the end of the world as it does sit on a ridge. The original scenery has a flatten applied. I really would love to have these cliffs smoothed out to give more realistic contours.
My question is therefore is Terrain Sculptor what i need to do this? I have had a bit of a go with it but i'm not really getting anywhere fast!! A talk through the process would be good! ;-)
Any help or pointers would really be appreciated as this is the final piece of my sim set up that would improve the overall experience no end. Thank you

Terrain Sculptor should be able to help. As for help or pointers, have you reviewed the user manual? (Please don't be insulted by this question; you'd be amazed how many people ask for help before opening the manual.) Some familiarity with how terrain is handled inside FS would also be helpful.

Thanks for your reply. Yes i have read the manual and i tried to follow the process but the manual is more of a what the functions do rather than a novice guide which i am, sorry. I manged to produce a CVX.bgl file for my Project but when loaded in scenery folder it makes no difference to the airfield. Im a bit confused by deleting original flatten and then what type of flatten i need to produce etc!

The manual is not meant to be a novice guide. (Every novice needs different guidance. A manual that addresses all their needs would be so thick nobody would ever read it.)

Nor is TS meant for complete novices. The Terrain Sculptor manual is written at a level whereby reasonable familiarity with terrain implementation is assumed, as is a general knowledge of FlightSim's file structure and associated requirements - sufficient to determine what you need to do. As you've noted, the manual tells you how to do it.

The (replacement) flatten you need to produce will be one that specifies the contours you wish to implement and be big enough to overcome the terrain features you don't want. If it's not immediately obvious, experiment. You can't do any harm, and you'll learn along the way. You will also need to set your mesh resolution sufficiently small that the changes you make can be implemented. For example, if you specify two sculpt node 50' apart then, to be recognized and implemented how you intend, your mesh resolution must be less than 13 m.
