• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Creating reflective textures for FS9

Hi can any one point me to a tutorial for creating reflective textures, applying them to a gmax part for export to a fs9 aircraft?

In FS9 you don't have much flexibility. Create your normal Diffuse texture and apply that. Your Diffuse (day) texture must end in _t.bmp to be reflective - otherwise it will be transparent. Then add an alpha channel to this image - the darker the area, the more reflective it will be. So make bare metal areas relatively dark and painted areas relatively light. I use white on painted areas - the reflections will fade out your paint and lettering. Then add a night texture, which must end in _L.bmp. This night bitmap does not have to be added to the GMAX material. That's pretty much all of it.

I do have a procedure using DXTBmp and Paint Shop Pro 7.0 here:

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the link Tom! I am using Photo shop elements and Image Tool. I hope I can figure a way to use my tool kit to do your procedure. From what I have read here in the graphic forum, Image Tool will not do for creating the Alpha channel. Does Martin require a fee for using DXTBMP on a payware project?

Note that I do not create the alpha channel in DXTBmp - it only does what ImageTool does, plus one thing ImageTool cannot do - import an external alpha channel created by your paint program. Since it appears from the net that PSE cannot create true alpha channels integrated within the image (as ImageTool requires), you will need to either use DXTBmp or take your PSE image and place it into a tool like GIMP (free). This paint program can create true alpha channels. I don't know if there is a restriction using GIMP for commercial projects.

You must get permission from Martin before using files created with DXTBmp in commercial projects - I don't know if a fee is involved.

I was able to get it with PSE and Image tool. I created a layer in PSE to use as an alpha then used Image tool to create the alpha from the ul pixel.
