• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

That's a shame. I was really looking forward to flying that one.

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

Finally, we have the story of KOMO photographer Dave Crockett. He is the only survivor I am paying homage to, in this work, partly because I've been a lifelong viewer of KOMO News, and partly because I nearly ended up with the car in which he drove down and ultimately got trapped in. The...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

After I had posted the last update to this, I made a discovery that ultimately made me revise one model. Unbeknownst to me, there had been a documentary that aired a decade ago on Mount St. Helens' 30th anniversary, and in that documentary was one sole photograph showing Gerry Martin's RV. It...

    Bell 505 JetRanger X

I cannot wait to try that out! Question: Before Hovercontrol shut down there was talk (and progress shots) of an update to the Bell 206 for FSX either by Dodosim or Milviz. I cannot remember where, but the VC cockpit works-in-progress shots were incredibly well detailed and photorealistic. Did...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

After I had completed modeling Dave Johnston's Coldwater II location, it became apparent to me that the May 17/morning of May 18 subset package was going to be a heavily-involved affair. An affair in which I decided, upon further thought, that I would model as close as possible (and within...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

While not necessarily a development fork, I have added a significant scenery detail to which marks the dedication of this entire scenery development, to geologist Dr. David A. Johnston. As Mount St. Helens' activity began to ramp up in April, geologists with the USGS sought a closer...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

In comes a fork in the road. This fork, is called "Bulge Discovery, and a pair of beer commercials" A little backstory behind this particular "fork" in development: As a child, the first documentary of Mount St. Helens I watched was a half-hour documentary called "Keeper of the Fire," produced...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

Thank you. It's comments like this that keep this project going in spite of several times lately in which I've thought I should cease development on it. This project basically got started solely out of a personal desire to see what it was like around the volcano before its 1980 eruption. I...

Loowit Sceneries - The Official Mount St. Helens Experience.

As part of the recreation of Mount St. Helens in its pre-1980 environment, I have decided to rename the project a bit. It is now known as Loowit Sceneries, and is the official name for the entire Mount St. Helens set of pre-1980 packages that are now in final development. Over the last few...

Coming soon: FSX Time Capsule - - Mount St. Helens Pre-1980 Experience - Part Three: The Morning of May 18, 1980. A peaceful serenity

I figured I would post a slight update here as there really hasn't been much to update on, except the correction of a rather significant error which, thankfully, I caught sooner rather than later. This particular update uses the May 17, 1980 screenshot although it applies just as well to the...

Coming soon: FSX Time Capsule - - Mount St. Helens Pre-1980 Experience - Part Two: The Opening Act

I've since renamed this phase of the project "The Warm Up Act," and as part of that process I've decided to go in and modify the May 17, 1980 aerial image by overlapping some elements of the May 2, 1980 aerial. Namely, the snowfields on the north side of the volcano. This gives the May 2, 1980...

Coming soon: FSX Time Capsule - - Mount St. Helens Pre-1980 Experience - Part Three: The Morning of May 18, 1980. A peaceful serenity

It is Sunday, May 18, 1980. The time, is 8:27 a.m. For fifty seven days, Mount St. Helens has been quaking, shaking, and belching. Her once pristine, snowy white Fujiyama-esque flanks are stained in hues of bluish grays and browns. Her north flank, once pristine and snow-capped, is a battered...

Coming soon: FSX Time Capsule - - Mount St. Helens Pre-1980 Experience - Part Two: The Opening Act

Last night was a significant achievement and the successful completion of a major personal milestone, and in many ways the culmination of a years-long dream to be able to successfully replicate this look in the sim. As I've been working on this project, I've scoured gigabytes of USGS data and...

Coming soon: FSX Time Capsule - - Mount St. Helens Pre-1980 Experience.

It's been a couple days since the last post on this project, and last night I completed yet another milestone. It had been decided a long time ago, that the pre-1980 package will contain two distinct eras. Package One features the area in the late 1970s, before peaceful tranquility was abruptly...

QGIS export issues. I need to export from 32 bit to 16. How?

I will definitely keep all of that in mind for when it comes to compiling the final terrain BGLs and at this point, I hope I don't mess things up! For now, however, I have to figure out how to get the DEMs to even produce accurately, much less find out how to merge the pre-eruption elevation...

QGIS export issues. I need to export from 32 bit to 16. How?

I'd have to say that the amount of knowledge I've gained thus far on this project could probably exceed a couple lifetimes. In the process of creating this terrain I've learned one of the reasons as to why I am having that artifacting (e.g. the cliffs and sudden rises in terrain that drop off...

QGIS export issues. I need to export from 32 bit to 16. How?

These are the artifacts I am currently experiencing (images attached below), and I believe it might be because the DEM is exporting as a 32 bit DEM. I noted in one YouTube tutorial, specifically this one here: ( ) that DEM data above 10 meter resolution should be expported as a 16 bit...

QGIS export issues. I need to export from 32 bit to 16. How?

When you say "clean data set" are you inferring that everything be done from scratch again? That is a route I would rather not take. Also, for whatever reason, attempts to merge the custom GeoTIFF with a post-eruption DEM I have have at 30-meter resolution seems to fail as well as attempts to...

QGIS export issues. I need to export from 32 bit to 16. How?

I am having QGIS export issues. It seems as though every trick in the book to either convert or export the newly-minted pre-1980 terrain as a Complex Integer 16 bit file (the type needed for 30 meter mesh) is not working. Efforts to do so either corrupt the data or the layer does not show up in...
