• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS Converting MSFS DDS textures to PNG

You can use Microsoft's texconv to convert MSFS DDS textures to PNG for use in your Blender or 3dsMax projects. I made a folder with texconv.exe and a batch file to convert files from the "input" to "output" folders. Copy the MSFS textures to "input", run the batch file, and find the PNG files...

    MSFS Parallax in Blender

I'm linking a zipped .blend file for devs that want to experiment with parallax. Parallax_Test.zip Set the blend Mode to Opaque (Alpha Mask is the default... and wrong) Shadow and culling probably don't matter. Type will be Parallax. Bare color should be set to White, unless you want tinting...

MSFS Fly By Wire addon for Blender 3.x

I sometimes extract the gltfs from MSFS models to see how they work. To view them in Blender involved a process of importing to Blender2.92 with the Fly By Wire MSFS import/export addon, then save a .blend file then import to Blender 3.x with the Asobo exporter. I got irritated finally and...

MSFS Asobo Exporter defaults your textures to 80% brightness

Here's a link: https://devsupport.flightsimulator.com/t/blender-addon-sets-base-color-to-0-8-value/6556/4 You should remember to reset the MSFS material Base Color to 1.0, or you'll be darkening your models by 20%. The linked discussion details how this can be altered in the Asobo script to...

MSFS Model shows correctly in the sim but not in MCX

Official\Steam\microsoft-airport-lppi-pico\scenery\microsoft\Pico-Airport\modelLib (LPPI_3) MCX doesn't read it (or write it) correctly.

MSFS Missing values in Parallax material

Hi Arno. I found there are some missing values in the visualization and export of MSFS parallax emissiveFactor: The emission is white here, but it should be orange, as shown in the Material Editor. On export it will show wrongly as white in the sim. The MCX glTF text: The original glTF from...

    Flip UVs ?

Would it be possible to add the ability to vertically flip the UVs? We can flip textures, but there may be times we need to keep the texture as they are, but still flip the viewed image, hence the idea of flipping UVs. In Blender we can save an image of the UVs, flip it, and load it back into...

    Cleaning up Aerial Imagery

There are lots of online tools that will help clean up aerial imagery. For example, you want to eliminate the aerial 'anomaly' of an aircraft or a dock. Google's Magic Eraser comes to mind, but you need to use that on a smrt phone or tablet. Here are some alternatives for PCs...

    MSFS SU12 update

Any questions or comments? The DevMode GUI seems to have changed a bit. It seems more responsive. The slew function seems to be fixed so it works after using the DevMode camera.

    Convert directly to .blend

Hi Arno. Would it be possible to add .blend as an import and export for MCX? It appears there are online converters that do this, but they export mesh only to .blend. I'm thinking this might help modelers that like using sketcher but would like to tweak in Blender. Also, FSX or P3d models could...

Removing Docks from Lakes and Bays

CGL Before: After: I cheated.: I stole the QUAD level 17 from here, which is as detailed as it gets in the original tiles. I extracted/resized an 2048x2048 png of the tile from a screensave using paint.net to resize to level 20. I then cut and pasted, and blurred a bit, to eliminate the...

    MSFS SampleMaterials for Blenderv3.10

Here's the SDK SampleMaterials for Blender. This is for the official Asobo addon, and Blenderv3.10. The zip file contains .blend files of each material example (minus SSS and Hair because the exporter does not support these). SampleMaterials_Blender.zip

    MSFS Re-using MSFS Textures

MSFS has a lot of nice textures used in their models. We can re-use these textures in our own models via Blender. But one of the advantages of re-using textures is that we can reference these textures without including them in our packages, saving potential gigabytes of project size. The key is...

    MSFS Tinting a MSFS Material

Sometimes you'll have an albedo texture that is just not the right color. You could alter the color in a paint program. Or you can easily tint the texture in Blender:

    MSFS Asobo Default Textures

MSFS has a ton of textures. They can be accessed in your modeling program if only you know where to find them. Attached is a zip containing lists of the default textures used in the Standard edition of MSFS (with all the base added packages). You can copy a path from the text to Windows file...

    SU11 Helipads

Attached is an example of a helipad. Things have changed a bit. I just added it to c59, but it could have been a new airport. The Microsoft examples don't have parking associated with the helipads,, so I left it out as well.

    SU10 impressions

I thought I'd start a discussion about the MSFS SU10; In DevMode, the Properties menu doesn't seem so touchy, and you can switch 'objects' and it properly works on the new object. Something that seems broken is create an apron. Then color it, move it, assign material... broken.
