    Ortho has ruined my scenery

After reading everything Gary sent and whatever else I could find on the subject I remembered that I had originally installed P3D in the Program Files folder by accident. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and my ortho scenery showed up! Not sure what was wrong, but "unplugging it and...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

That said, the clear-as-mud posts make the ones that have something in them that I already know make me want to do backflips of joy down the hallway. And Arno's program does so much that I am wondering if the next development release will help me understand women. But seriously, I am really...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

Your posts are generally clear as mud to me --at first -- until I start digging into each element of what you bring up. Then as I tackle things one at a time, your helpful posts become crystal clear sir. Just takes a bit to learn and then grasp the various programs, codes, and what-not. Yes, I...

    Starting open-source scenery community

If anyone is interested, Wild Weasel Simulations is starting an open-source scenery community so we can put our scenery design heads together to improve certain aspects of the flight simulation experience. My intent is to have both payware and freeware products, but I would like for public areas...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

I also noticed that the much larger TIF file from Earth Explorer, while it looks more sharp than the smaller JP2 file from the USGS National Map site, actually has less pixels. 6390 x 7670, 187 mb TIF compared to 6964 x 8603, 23 mb JP2. I was going along nicely, now I feel like I've drifted...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

Good catch; According to the TXT file that accompanied the 159 megabyte file and it appears so: "32-bit pixels, 4 band color(RGBIR) values 0 - 255" But I thought QGIS exported as a three-channel RGB GeoTIFF. Verifying that as well. Another variable is that I generate an INF file from the...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

I recently registered for an account at USGS Earth Explorer and found a high-resolution option for the 3.75-minute ortho tiles (approximately ten times larger than those available at the USGS National Map). When I load the new, larger file into QGIS for conversion to WGS84 and resample using the...

    On fraction bits

Source quality could be it. Occasionally when I import USGS elevation data there is a warning that pops up asking to convert the data to another format with varying options of accuracy. Perhaps that's evidence that despite all data coming from the same source, some tiles are older and are of a...

    On fraction bits

Thanks Giovanni! Is there any reasoning behind when terracing occurs and when it doesn't? I have read what the P3D's SDK page says on terracing http://www.prepar3d.com/SDK/Environment%20Kit/Terrain%20SDK/Terrain%20and%20Scenery.html and I don't completely get it.

    On fraction bits

After creating 10-meter terrain mesh for several states in the U.S., I have finally come across what appears to be a terracing effect. Not a very good example, but you can see below what looks like graph paper laid over the mountain. My source data is USGS 1/3 arc-second, 1-degree lat/long...

    Blending airports into custom terrain

No doubt. The folks here (you especially) have been so tremendously helpful and I am in no rush whatsoever. Plus almost everything I am asking about is on a gargantuan scale. Everyone has a million other things to do and I mostly wanted the peace of mind of knowing that after making significant...

    Blending airports into custom terrain

I am a few weeks into creating 10-meter mesh scenery for the United States (free and available at the link in my signature) and before I get too much further into the massive project, I would like to see if there is a way to get rid of the massive grade differences between the new scenery and...

    USGS Tile Servers for SBX?

Lo and behold! The web portal is running again. Regarding the good stuff: I wonder if a Freedom of Information Act request would open up full-resolution imagery? That would certainly be an improvement over the lossy files, but man that would eat up a lot of hard drives!

    USGS Tile Servers for SBX?

Your link is a great bypass for the (still non-functioning) web portal. I do have USGS data for XYZ tiles, but the resolution is around half of the jpeg2000 file. Perhaps WMS/WMTS setup is the way to go... I'll see how to make that happen.

    USGS Tile Servers for SBX?

I suppose I have been using the 3.75-minute imagery tiles - I forgot what they are called on the USGS site. While the pages you linked will definitely work for the elevation I need, all I can find for orthoimagery is for Guam, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, etc. Progress has been slow and it sure...

    GIS Data Sources

I can now find everything but ortho images now, Gary - thanks! Hunting for a back door for that too, and I'll share if I can find one.

    USGS website not working

Tom, the map loads fine... It's the data sets that won't kick in where we can get elevation data, waterbodies, ortho scenery, and so on. Hopefully Dick is right and it's just a temporary issue. Too bad it happens on the one day this month I have to work on anything, but that's how it goes!

    USGS website not working

Does anyone know what is wrong with the USGS National Map website (https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/basic/) or how long until it is back up again? I tried checking Earth Explorer and it is also down.

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

Arno, I think it won't be long before you'll need to compile a list of things that ScenProc DOESN'T do. Great program, and I am currently learning how to add trees to go with the autogen buildings that look incredible on P3D. By the way, is it possible for ScenProc to generate complex shapes...

    Ortho has ruined my scenery

Once I had P3D looking good with high-resolution terrain mesh, accurate water and road vectors, millions of buildings, and even vegetation shapefiles, I made the mistake of adding golf courses and quarries from ortho scenery. Now everything else looks ridiculous. I wonder if there is a more...
