• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

2002 groundpolys visibility

Another question about 2002 groundpolys and ASM tweak:

Is there a way to control visibility of the groundpolys in the ASM file? I know there must be a way of displaying them further than 10,000m away (which seems to be the default setting). How can I set this in the ASM file?

A weird issue has occured with my current project: if I rotate my aircraft to certain angles the groundpolys disappear and the underlying landclass is displayed. Is this affected by the ref point, the distance or anything else?
(This time the polys are at 0/0/0 and don't exceed 100m in length or width)

Hi Thorsten,

The visibility is in the SCALE_AGL command, it's the second argument that is the visiblity (or v1 range).

The disappearing polygons sounds a lot like a v2 value problem (which is the third argument in the command). But that value is normally calculated correctly by GMax. You can try to increase it, but if you make it bigger than necessary it will reduce your performance.

Thanks for the information, Arno, I found the distance value.

The other value (v3) seems to be between something like 2500 and 5000 for the different layers, but I think it's not the problem. I never had disappearing polys like this before.
Are there any known issues with high latitudes? This is Iceland, so there might be a problem.

Hi Thorsten,

How far are the polygons from the reference point? I have had such problems when they were a few kilometres from the RefPoint.

Maybe you spot the error - it's a usual groundpoly, the refpoint is within the object.

Hi Thorsten,

I think when I had the problem at Schiphol it was further away from the centre than you have now. But does it happen at the point furthest away from the reference point?

It might be a good idea to split it into different reference points. That will always help for the performance.

I don't have this problem in Copenhagen, which is way bigger than BIKF.
Using different refpoints for the ground polys also give me visual issues in FSX (with foggy weather).

Maybe you can find an obvious error in my asm file.

Ok, forget it - for some reason (don't ask why - I did not change anything) the issue is gone.

FS logic...

...and it's there again.

Really no idea what's going on. For a moment I thought it only happens if a texture is missing, but that does not seem to be the case. :(

Did you try to increase the v2 value a bit and did that help?
