• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

8.33KHz COM Radio channel bandwidth

For many years, MSFS has used the 25Khz COM radio band channel spacing.
For a number of years, particularly in Europe, Aircraft Radios have been produced & used that use 8.33KHz spacing, and this require 3 digits after the decimal point to uniquely identify each channel frequency.
These radios are starting to be introduced worldwide.

So, the $64,000 question is, will FS11 support 8.33KHz channel radios, and if so, will existing radios be compatible --

Are there any existing FSX aircraft being produced with working 8.33KHz radios.?

Actually, FS since FS2002 has supported 12.5 KHz channel spacing...

...including of course three decimals, such as 118.875

I rather doubt though that FSvNext will support 8.33 KHz steps.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has mandated the reduction of VHF communication channel spacing in Europe from 25 kHz to 8.33 kHz for all aircraft operating above 20,000 feet.

I was not aware that there was ever, in the real world, a 12.5Khz Airband Channel spacing. ?

There use to be an 50KHz Airband Channel spacing, but those radios were uncertified many years ago.

Some research indicates that the USA is looking at 12.5Khz for "agencies" like police & firefighters, and even the future of 6.25 KHz, but this does not seem to apply to USA Aviation.

But some of the newer Aviation Radios are switchable to tune in 12.5 KhZ steps. Others in Europe in 8.33Khz steps.

CONFUSING !!!

However, if currently FS can support 3 digits after the decimal point, then I suppose it therefore can specify the 8.33 KhZ spacing. (or 12.5 Khz) ( good news )

The potential problem, as in the real world, will be for all those with exsiting aicraft fitted with Radios that only tune to 2 digits ( 25 Khz), be be updated with new Radios with the 8.33Khz spacing. ( and or 12.5 Khz) !!

If this is not done, then reading and using Real World Frequencies from newer approach plates (etc), will have problems.

AS far as FS11 is concerned, it will be interesting to see what DATE, ACES choose to use to reference FS11's Nav Data, airport data, etc.....
