• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

AIFP seems to mess with wingspan and AI behaviour

Hey all. Firstly, I don't expect this to get fixed. I am very saddened by the news that Don is no longer with us, as AIFP was - and still is - one of his greatest gifts to the flight simming community.

I would like to bring attention an issue that I've only noticed with 3.4.3.15. Somehow, AIFP messes with the wingspan of an AI aircraft in a way that the aircraft's behaviour is affected - aircraft taxis weirdly, doesn't rotate on takeoff, and eventually loses control, plowing through suburbs outside the airport and the like. Because the aircraft hasn't taken off, the ATC system permanently holds waiting aircraft on the runway until they despawn, essentially softlocking the AI system.

This affects all aircraft associated with a particular aircraft.cfg - e.g. all aircraft in the folder "AIA_ERJ-190" will be affected by the issue, but aircraft in the "FLAi_E190" folder will not if AIFP hasn't touched that folder. The issue can be fixed by copying over aircraft.cfg parameters from other aircraft, or reinstalling the problem aircraft.

Looking at the wingspan in the Aircraft Editor: Unaffected aircraft show their original w/s, affected aircraft a w/s of 15m. I've done tests by changing the w/s of a flyable aircraft from 119m to 10m, and confirm that even with full back pressure, the aircraft refuses to rotate, and eventually I lose control. The exact same symptoms that I'm seeing with the affected AI planes.

My main questions are:
1. Is there a fix to the problem that's easier than reinstalling? Manually resetting the wingspan in the aircraft.cfg solves the problem
2. Is there a way to downgrade AIFP to a version without the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Too funny, that glitch had been driving me nuts a few months ago! I finally ironed it out, because I made flight plans once, but edited my AI many, many times, always blaming the Asobo gremlins and never once suspecting Don's. I think the best solution is awareness and to refresh the aircraft.cfg after writing a plan, but it seems like you could spoof AIFP to a bogus directory to corrupt, or even write a script or .bat file that both runs AIFP and corrects this error.

I don't recommend downgrading because AIFP was pretty buggy and Don's greatest version addressed many of them. I'm still going to blame Asobo for this one, but here's the previouly released version 3.4.3.9.

I'm sure I'd attached the file, but I see it's rather immense. I've edited my first comment to include part "A" and this has part "B."

As to versions, Don had declared these past two to be compatible with MSFS. The thing is that flight plan files are identical back to FSX, extremely similar further back and the bug definitely affects MSFS.

Which version of FS?
I probably should have specified - FSX: SE

Thank you very much!

Hey guys since going over to Fsxse I have been pulling my hair out trying to work out why most of my AI aircraft particuarly GA were all over the place, not taking off and dancing everywhere.
I finally came across a thread regarding V3 so I went back to V2 where the wingspan doesn't change.
Do the files you have attached stopped this?
AifpV3 I think offers more than V2 but if there is no cure I will stay with it.
Cheers
Nunner
Ps sorry this is going back a bit.

Hi Nunner, the only thing I'd recommend is periodically checking your aircraft.cfg files for any malformed wing_span attributes.
I don't think it's worth the hassle of downgrading to AIFP v2. Obviously, it's your call if you decide to, but I'm not sure if the older versions have the same issue.
The only true fix I can see is not using FSX, as in the three years since I made this thread, I've upgraded to P3D with no issues on the supposedly bugged version of AIFP, but I'm sure that's not an option for you.

Thanks for that. I've been using Aifp2 because it doesn't alter the wingspan value.
I'm migrating to MSFS slowly but can't make my mind up.
Is P3D worth it.
