• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Animation of a ferris wheel....help needed please

Hi,

I am animating a ferris wheel and I have the wheel rotating correctly.

How can I rotate the gondolas as if attached to the wheel but remaining upright? Do I need to move and keyframe the position
of each individual gondola around all points of 360 degrees ? I tried parenting the gondolas to the wheel but they end up upside
down at the point where the wheel has rotated 180 degrees.

thanks

Yep, i did the same for my "gondolas"

But in your case i would only use 2 or 4 Key Frames each gondolas (each 90 degrees, than with Linear interpolation you should be good to go)

Ok, thanks. I just thought that there might be a quicker way. I have done 2 of the 24 gondolas now so only another 22 to go!!!

Thanks for the reply

It Indeed a nice problem, this guy has a clever solution to solve It in Blender, you Need to try if that trick using object constrains Will translate correctly in MSFS

Hi again Mamu,

Sadly, the Blender to MSFS exporter doesn't hold all the necessary parameters for this to work. I have it working perfectly using this method in Blender but when I export to MSFS
the wheel turns but the gondolas remain static.

Oh well, back the original method. A real shame because this would have saved me hours of work and been a lot more accurate.

cheers

In the end I animated one of the 22 gondolas then before pushing down to the nla track i used shift + D to copy it. Then i smoved it to its start location and made a keyframe. Then I shifted the keyframes that were copied to be in the correct position for the new gondola.

Oh, well. That didn't work either. All looks ok in Blender but when I exported to MSFS the gondolas are moving out of position. Back to the drawing board!

Ok, I think that I have fixed it.

The problem I believe was not originally baking the animation prior to pushing down the NLA tracks. My scene has two ferris wheels in it plus an
animated funfair ride , amounting to 50 animated objects in total and the sim was struggling to reload the animation starting positions. Once I baked them in
it now seems to be coping better.

I wouldn't have fixed this without spotting the need for baking in this thread,
so thanks to Didier for that. Also thanks to Mamu for his input.

cheers
