• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS BALLOONISTS WANT IN!!

What's the chances of getting a Hot Air balloon for the game? I have a design idea and a great idea for Control etc etc.

Microsoft will include Helicopters in the future (paid DLC ? ) - and i'm by no means an expert on these things, but wouldn't it be possible to "just" create a 3D Balloon Model and then fly it as a helicopter ?

As long as they would take away the being able to control the direction.

As balloons use the winds at different heights to basically steer it.

Hey man, winds are modeled, im pretty sure thermals are on the asobo pipeline too, so i think its definetely possible to create a baloon. Im guessing if you mess with the parameters of a plane to make it extra light, with an invisible propeler mounted vertically to act as your burner, you should have a pretty good idea of whats possible. Im not sure, really not sure, but i think the CAPS parachute on the SR22 is modeled in MSFS, so maybe have a look at how a parachute is setup on the SR22, that could give you a clue as to what parameters you have to have to basically have a object float in the air.

Could you help with the above mentioned tweaks? I have a hot air balloon just need to somehow tweak the cfg files.

Right now the standard of flight response and dynamics in MSFS is very non-representative of real airplanes in my opinion. I hope it will improve but I think it will only happen when we the users help them. Their B747, for example, has control response in a turn such that it will only keep turning with about half aileron applied. That is easily fixed but why has it been released like that? Just one example. The post stall behaviour built in is only vaguely representative of straight wing airplanes, swept wings are different but it seems they have the same incorrect response.
It is a great shame that the brilliance in the scenery and surroundings is not matched with an acceptable standard of dynamics.
I hope it can be improved, meanwhile forget about balloons.
Roy

I have a lot of ideas about this, and have done quite a bit of research and planning. I do not currently know how feasible it is given the state of the sim. It's going to largely depend on how wind data works at varying elevations. I have been working on an email to Asobo to ask some questions (not sure how likely they are to respond, but seeing as they did at canard support for Dino maybe they'll have some thoughts?). I may start a Discord for fellow would-be virtual balloonists, as this is something I think could be done with a fair bit of custom logic. I already have a very high quality balloon model to work with, just need to learn... well... everything else. Hopefully Asobo can explain the current limitations to me first though before I dump too much effort into it.

I look forward to hearing your response if they respond.

Agreed, Roy. It's actually dire as a flying experience.
