• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Best way to create different elevation (hills)

Hi,
Just wanted to create some hills on the airport, and I don't know the best way to do it. I heard about an app called Terrain Sculptor, is that the best way?

I'll upload some examples of what I want do to:

Hi,

On the airport they are typically 3D models, since airports are in general flat. But if they are further away from the airport you can probably best make a new elevation BGL with resample that contains your hills, that's easier than trying to model them 3D.

Arno, I have been using Sketchup to create hills right next to the runway. Would using resample be more frame friendly? Also, the reason why I was using sketchup is that it allows me to hand place vegetation exactly where I want to on a particular hill. I don't have many pics on my ipad, but here is an idea of what I mean. This hill at the forefront right, with a pool house was done with sketchup, and I was able to hand place vegetation at different elevations and angles on that hill. Bernardo.

If it's close to a runway, your current approach is probably best. Runways tend to flatten nearby terrain mesh. Also with terrain mesh (resample) you have less precise control over the shape than your current model shows.

Thank you. I had in mind that most of the times were 3d models. Whenever I try with ADE I get some buggy clifs.

I don't know if this is an issue, but seasonal colouring is harder with models of terrain. It may not be an issue with a perpetually green tropical island, but in other areas it is a consideration.

cheers

Interesting consideration. You'd have to have a season switcher like Aime LeClercq's trees.
