Blend masks, what am I doing wrong?

#1
I have recently tried to make photoscenery using fsearth tiles. I previously tried with SbuilderX and Maps2BGL, but settled on using Fsearth tiles as it allows me to download very high resolution sceneries with little work. I have been succesful in creating my water masks with the .kml files. However, I can't seem to create a smooth blend with the .kml file, so I have decided to resample the BMP's that are on the edge of my scenery. I do this by putting the data from the 3 .inf files which fsearth tiles creates into one single .inf file, so that I have all the night/season/water masks which fsearth tiles already makes automatically; in addition to this, I add another source, which tells the resample.exe to use my .tiff image as a blend source in order to blend the image. However, I just can't seem to get the blend masks to show in fsx. I open the BMP in question, convert to grey scale in Gimp, paint it all white, and finally create a gradient from white to black, but even though I have added the other source to my inf file, the new BGL never contains the blended area. What am I doing wrong? Here is my code:

I appreciate any input you can give me in order to fix this annoying problem.

Hi,

I am not sure what the error is that makes your blendmask ineffective, but I did notice IMHO some conflicting entries in the inf:
- maybe source 1: "type = BMP" and add "layer = imagery" plus variation day?;
- you specify channel_landwatermask once as 3.2 and once as 6.2,;
- what is source 3? imagery? for winter?
- source 2 and 4 have the same source texture?
- source 3 and 6 have the same source texture?

Thanks for the help. The reason why I did all this is that fsearth tiles creates 3 different inf's, and I don't know if just drop them on top of resample.exe if all three of them will be taken into account. These are the three files that fsearth tiles created and which I combined into one:

Also, I added a seventh entry pointing to my blend tiff, renumbered all the sources in the combined inf file, and adjusted the channel_landmask, etc. to match the correct sources.

Hi,
Then I guess that is the problem. You never made any new layers to your BMP. Instead you made a new one.
I'd suggest to keep it simple and use the bmp for the day texture (source 1, imagery, BMP), make another texture (source 2, imagery, BMP) for the night variation (do not forget to rename your BMP, add _LM e.g. to your texture plus variation =night), another (source 3, imagery, BMP) for winter, adding e.g. _wi to the altered BMP and variation = winter, then one for the watermask (source 4, type tiff, 8 bit black and white, water is black, land is white, , layer=none) and finally your blendmask (source 5, type=tiff, layer=none, 8 bit b&w tif) which you can adapt from the watermask by making the transitions smoother.
That should do it.

Again I appreciate your help robystar. Can you give me a little example on what you mean? Sorry, but I am a complete noob at this and am kind of confused on how to go about all this. Also, I am still a little confused how fsearthtiles can compile the bgl's using these same inf files and I can't. Maybe it's the extra source and the re-numbering which is messing everything up? I understand what you mean about making the separate image files, but I am kind of confused on how to actually make the inf's. I'll try to follow your suggestions though and give it a try; I'll report back if I have any troubles.

Hi again,

Well, as I said, you made a new bmp for the blendmasktexture and secondly, you made a mistake in once putting channel 3.2 and once 6.2 in your inf file for the blendmask channel.
Sorry I do not have an example inf file available as I am on my laptop and not on my regular FS PC.
I think that FSearthtiles also made 3 inf files?

I am very happy to say that your advice worked robystar. On my first attempt, I got the blend mask to show up in fs.

Again, thanks a lot for your help; I would have never figured this out by myself.

Did you get the watermask to work I see the _W is missing from your inf entry.
SourceFile = AreaMask_Lm1_SnapOff_N025590466_N025562667_W080263268_W080232146.tif no _W.tif?

* Also to make it easier get rid of the long bmp names
Area_Lm1_SnapOff_N025590466_N025562667_W080263268_W080232146.bmp

and name it something easier MyScenery.bmp,MyScenery_LM.bmp,MyScenery_W.tif,MyScenery_B.tif...etc

Is it necessary to have a _w for the water mask bitmap? Fsearth tiles just makes all my bitmaps and necessary files automatically, so I never bother to change the names. However, now that I need to blend the outer areas of my scene ties manually, there is one area with water on it that isn't blending properly. It correctly delineates the coast and has water where there should be water, but the water that is there isn't the default fsx water. It is the underlying satellite imagery of water, although it behaves like fsx water. Could it be that I need to add _w to the water mask file? Or is it that there is a conflict since fsearth tiles creates a bmp file where land is pink and water is blue, but I am creating a blend mask tiff file where land is white and water is black, somehow confusing resample.exe? I ask because before this water area was properly water masked, but now that I added a blend mask, the water mask that fsearthtiles makes seems to not be working properly since I still see the satellite imagery.

Hi,

Check the properties of your blend .tif. It should be pure black and white, LZW compressed (whatever that means) and preferrably 8-bit.
If you use Gimp then do not use the Gaussian blur to blur the transition between black and white because it leads to the problem you mention (again, do not ask me why).
By the way, you can name your textures whatever you want.
I have FSEarttiles make just one bmp (the photoreal one) and from that one I make the night map, the watermask map and the blendmask map (and if necessary the seasonal maps) myself.
That way I have one BMP and one simple inf file to start with and just add more info to the inf.
And as was suggested before, it is easier to give your bmp a shorter name like
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_day,
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_night,
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch _water,
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_blend,
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_summer,
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_winter
if that would happen to be the Welsh photoreal scenery area you would be making :).

Thanks again for the help; it's good to have more experienced scenery makers give me advice. I'll try the LZW compression. Before, my uncompressed Gimp blend masks would work, but I assume the use of a water mask along with a blend somehow requires this compression on the blend mask for it to work properly.

FYI: I just discovered this while searching for info to troubleshoot a scenery project from 2017.

LZW compression in a TIF source file is not required, and not recommended, as it is reported to cause a longer processing time by FS SDK Resample. :pushpin:
