• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS Blender to FS2020 - custom object faceted. Any trick for smooth surface?

Hi! I have an object that appears smooth in both Maya and Blender, and once I export it to FS2020, it's all faceted.

Any Blender or Maya tricks to keep it smooth?

Thank you! 🍻

Why is it smooth in Maya and Blender?

If you are using auto-smooth then it isn't really smoothed, it is just being drawn that way.

I don't believe that the MSFS exporter will keep the mesh smoothed if you are using auto-smooth.

You would need to apply a smoothing modifier or, in edit mode, use the mesh tools to make it smooth.

Smooth shading is working and the recommended way to do it to keep the geometry low and the performance high.

Hey guys, thank you so much for all your help! I finally fixed it!

There was no smooth modifier in Maya or Blender...

@Anthony31 adding the smooth modifier in blender did not work because the object is modeled/converted dirty and it's not ready for extra smoothing.. I just needed the normals fixed. So I selected the edges (blender), in the edit mode, Edge/Clear sharp, than in the Mesh/Shading/Smooth Edges

than I selected Faces, and in Face/Shade smooth, in Mesh/Shading/Smooth faces.. Also needed to invert a few faces and got a nice looking model.

Thank you so much! I'm new in blender.. and in maya mostly animating and sometimes do some simple modeling... just a stupid animator's level hahahah

Beer! 🍻

I tried your method, doesnt work for me :( All my faces and egdes are "Over smoothed"

Hahah you can't use my method as my model was faceted and I wanted it smooth 😆

looks like you need the opposite action.
you probably need to remodel or reduce polygons in some 3d software

Hi,

Modeling can be learned and the best way to learn is to do simple things yourself and then make them more complicated.
The fashion of taking already modeled objects and finishing the animations and XML code will not make you a good modeler.
There is nothing better than doing your games before starting a real project.

Theses projects has been maded withe the method I explain in an other pos and that SRBIJAAAA has detailled:
This has required several week for modelisation and then smoothing.

Lagaffe, nice models! Many developers are rushing to finish their new fancy airport and skipping the important steps which are clean modeling from scratch and amazing textures. Also most of the time models are being converted from the previous sim versions and other simulators too.
I've seen people presenting youtube tutorials and in the same tutorial importing some model they have available from someone else's scenery. (that nobody else has hahah). Once they distribute their airport half of the objects are missing of course :)
