• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all,

I have uploaded the tutorial I have written about making a house for FSX using SketchUp. This tutorial is aimed at the novice developer that wants to build his (or her) first object. It covers the following topics:

  • How to gather the information about the building
  • How to model the geometry in SketchUp
  • How to create the texture from photo material
  • How to map the texture on the building
  • How to export the building to the file formats used by FSX
  • How to position the building at the right location in the world

You can find the tutorial on the Wiki.

I hope it is useful to you and let me know if you have any feedback!

Some of the topics are not SketchUp specific by the way, so they might also be useful when you are modelling in GMax or FSDS.

I know I saw a video of this tutorial but I cant relocate it. Can you provide a link please? Thanks

Hi Kevin:

The PDF version of Arno's "Build your house using SketchUp" tutorial is here: ;)

Hmmm... I also cannot find Arnos' fine "Build your house using SketchUp" tutorial in the FSDeveloper You Tube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/fsdeveloper

FYI
: Tom Gibson's nice tutorial is still available here:

Also, the "official" Google Sketchup tutorial videos are here:

http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/training/videos.html

BTW: Another nice series on building-related work-flows with Sketchup is here:

Thanks! Yeah I know I watched it. Not sure where I got the link from. Driving me crazy now lol.

Hi,

I can't even remember I made a video tutorial for that as well. But let me check tomorrow, I should still have the file here and then I will upload it to YouTube.

Hi,

I don't think I made a real video tutorial for SketchUp. But I made a quick screen capture that I ran on a FS show before. It shows making the object from my written tutorial, but it has no sound. I put it on YouTube as well now:

Thats the one I watched but it had sound. This is going to drive me cray now. I do remember that it wasn't under the fsdeveloper tag at youtube. I need to retrace my steps on how I may have gotten to the video. I know it was a link from something I was reading.

Using Sketchup

I am new on the subjet. I tried to do a building with sketchup. It was all ok, but when I tried to load the building on FSX, I tried with Whisplacer but also with SDK Object placer, the resultant building in FSX was not complete, the roof or perhaps some lateral wall was not represented.
Someone too experienced that? What can be the trouble? Thank denic

Thank you Bernardo,, the bug was in missing night textures, now, due to your help, is all ok denic

Is there something different to do for objects in P3D? Something about object textures needing to be in a different format or something like that?

No, not really. FSX objects work in P3D. And if you want to use the P3D v2 MDL format you need to use the XtoMDL from that SDK, but the texture formats are the same.

Hello,

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I just wanted to ask if anyone knows where could I get a computer based free version of Sketchup? It could be a fairly old version, I just wanted a free version that I could install and use offline (unlike the only current free option which is browser based).
I tried installling SketchUpMAke 2017 but this is only a trial version for the pro version which lasts only 30 days...
Any help would be appreciated!

Leonardo

As365,

Oh you had experience with it and thats what happened? Guess I’ll wait 30 days and see then :)
Btw the functionalities that get disabled don’t render the program basically useless for FS scenery design purposes right?

Thanks,

Leonardo
