• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Building an entire airport with Gmax

Hi!

I've been building an aiport for quite some time now with fssc, SBuilder and Gmax. I use Gmax to create the buildings etc. Recently I got in contact with a guy named Martin Brunken at Fly Tampa. I had emailed him and asked him how they were able to create such great payware scenery. He answered that they used Gmax and SCASM but not how they used aplications.

Does anyoen here have any experience of building an aiport with Gmax? How do you get the airport and the all the things in it at the right cordinates? Is there somekind of plugin to do that with gmax? And how is SCASM used. I don't wanna bother them to much at Fly Tampa so I thought I'd ask here instead.

I would really apriciate if someone could explaina bit more to me how it's done.

Hi Erik,

In theory you could build your entire airport in GMax, but the code produced by MakeMDL is only optimal for 3D object. So to get the best performance you would have to do quite some hand tweaking of the source.

SCASM is a language to write BGL files in, FSSC for example makes SCASM files for you. If you want to design your airport in SCASM you need to be a bit of a code-head and be familiar with the code as well. I would not advice anybody to start this way, until you are quite familiar with source code reading and tweaking (I made the Schiphol scenery of NL2000 v1 and v2 completely by hand in SCASM).

So GMax is an option, but for the entire airport I would advice a tool like SceneGenX more. If you want you can make certain ground details with ground polygons in GMax (using the zbias_ prefix to get the correct behavior). But designing your entire airport in GMax would not be my choice.

For example GMax does not support taxilines, so you would have to draw them all as polygons, does not should like easier then the other tools to me :).
