• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Can’t successfully adjust the length of stock runway

Afternoon,

Doing some flying around the Himalayas. There is very little in the way of upgrades to the stock P3D airports in this region. Using SBX and Google Earth, I’m trying to adding aprons and correcting the runway length. I lengthened the runway at Jomsom (VNJS) - no other changed were made. When I spawn to the active runway, this is what I see:

Nothing was done to the elevation, but it looks like the runway is now floating on or above something. I have FTX Global and ADE is turned on for this airport. This is what Jomsom looks like without the lengthened runway (ADE is still turned on):

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Thank you in advance.

You have to flatten the area at the end of extended runway, I assume?

Good morning, Tom. Thanks for the reply! I tried both flatten and flatted map class as well as airport background flatten (I'm assuming that's what you meant). Neither worked. It looks as though I am inside of a mountain that doesn't exist on the default runway. I've added about 45m of runway to either end, but the start position is in the same spot as in the default.

Colin,
have you 'excluded' the default airport background and replaced it with a new one that goes beyond your new runway extensions?

@raymk ,
Thanks for suggestions! I have made an exclusion polygon around the runway and played with exclude autogen, flatten, flatten mask class map, and flatten mask class map exclude autogen with no luck. Not sure if that's what you mean by exclude the default airport background. Do you mean Exclude General: Airport Backgrounds instead?

The second part of your question - replacing it with a new back ground - I have not done. I don't know how to do that. It gives me something to look up this morning.

Thank you!

@tgibson I was reading one of your earlier posts from October 2016. You talk about the polygon crossing over the original background boundary. Is this just the runway or is there a specific way to determine the background boundaries?

Cheers,

You create a small polygon that 'cuts' the outline of the original background. [This background is what flattens the area required for the airfield.] You define this polygon as "Exclude general" and "Airport backgrounds". This is what eliminates the original background.
Then you create another polygon to suit the area that you need for runways, etc.. Define this polygon as "Airport background" and "Flatten, Mask Class Map, Exclude Autogen". This creates a new background.
When you compile you should see a CVX file as well as the normal airport file.
