• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can someone help a newbie before he loses his mind?

Wow, I can only imagine they made it this hard to do anything to put people off making their own scenery to help protect companies that sell them, mini rant over and apologies if this isn’t in the right forum.

I have a few questions, can someone have pity on me, I’m not used to this stuff but I very much would like to do at least some basic things, I just want to remove some buildings on a tiny airfield , add in some replacements, add a nearby wind turbine/windmill, exclude some trees, and place a texture of the ground I screen grabbed from Bing maps of the airfield and the windmill where I’ve edited out the image of the windmill and some planes on the airfield. I’ve gone through a YouTube series on using the SDK but it’s only got me so far and had mistakes that cost me time, also just read some of the Introduction to MSFS SDK in here but still no joy.

1. So how do you actually save a project correctly so you can come back to it, load it up and and continue working on it as hitting Save Scenery in the Scenery Editor doesn’t work for me, right now if I have a Polygon set to remove vegetation and next to it I place a windmill, if I hit Save Scenery in the Scenery Editor it pops up to save the Shape file, and when I first did it it would then pop up asking to save a Scene file I think but it now doesn’t. If I close the project and load it back up using the first xml file the only thing it loads is the Polygon, do I have to hold shift and select everything in the Scenery Editor window before hitting save?

2. How do I go about adding in a large texture to cover a field, I’ve made it so it’s a factor of 4 so it loads in ok, but when I add it to the polygon outline it is small and repeats itself in that area, if I scale it up that just effects the polygon.

3. Are there any good places to get free 3D objects that work in this, looking for hedges and electrical towers as there no hedges, bush’s don’t look like I need and there’s only one type of electrical/power tower included.

4. Anyone know how to make an imported Google maps 3D file have just one large texture file instead of dozens and dozens?

5. How do you remove lights that are in the world as I can’t select them?

There’s probably more stuff I’d need to learn to do what I want but I forgot.

Thanks guys.

I'm still new but feel I can answer #1. Forgive me for any wrong advice :)

1. When you save a new project it'll ask you to name it etc.. use the ICAO of the airport you're working on. After you save that file, that is the project file you open the next time. Polygon's have to be saved in the "\PackageSources\scene" folder that was created when you saved the project. Clicking "save Scene" saves the placement of the objects in your project. Any new polygons need to be save specifically like mentioned prior. I never get any dialog after clicking save scene unless I modified or added a polygon.

After loading the saved project, expand loaded project and click the fist item in the list and in the Inspector window you'll see "Load Scenery". It sometimes takes a min before you see everything load in.
