• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS Can't yet install the msfs sdk extensions for 3ds Max 2018

Hi all! No problems are unique, so I hope one of you know this answer. I've got msfs 2020 installed on my "E" Drive. I'm using the same drive for the sdk. I have finally reached the point of wanting to add some scenery. I did tell (afaik) the sdk installer to include the files needed for max 2018, and it claimed it would add bytes to my hd. Yet, I see no evidence in 3ds Max 2018 of the SDK having been installed. I gather from some comments that I should have a "tab" for MSFS, but I only see the P3d tabs. I gather I'm to see a flight simulator material type in the section of materials headed by the physical material, but no joy.

I tried to "modify and repair" the sdk. When that changed nothing, I uninstalled the sdk, and reinstalled.

Nothing.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure what your problem is but you could try this. Look in the SDK for this max script. MSFS SDK\Tools\3dsMax\FlightSimPackage\startup\FlightSim_SDK_Startup.ms
This file should have automatically been installed during the SDK installation into your Autodesk\3ds Max 2018\scripts\Startup folder, if not copy it to there and restart Max. You should now see two additional tabs [FlightSim] and [Babylon].
Every time you start Max it runs FlightSim_SDK_Startup.ms loading all the plugins and scripts from the SDK.
I hope you get all the menu selections under the [FlightSim] tab which is my problem with Max 2019 since the SDK updated to 0.6.

See if the msfs sdk installer placed a folder called "m2018" in the same drive where the sdk or 3ds max is installed. Inside there are 2 folders, copy these 2 folders into 3ds max main folder.

Not enough information. Can you elaborate a little more on what you mean and why?

The SDK auto-installs the system into Max. I might suggest uninstalling the SDK, then reinstall it and check Max.

Does Max have all its Registries in place? If its hidden from the SDK installer, it cannot install the max files.

On my first sdk install it installed normally into 3ds max. On this machine 3ds max was installed in the default "c:\program files........."

I then did the same to my other computer and the sdk did not install the plugin to the correct location, which is the main 3ds max folder. On this PC 3ds max was installed in another drive and location, not the default program files. There was a folder called "L:\M2017" on my L drive where 3ds max was installed "L:\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 2017".

Inside this M2017 folder (M20XX depending on the max version you selected to install the plugin to) was another 2 folders. Just copy the 2 folders inside this M2017 folder into 3ds max main folder. When you next load up 3ds max you'll see the plugins work as you'll see 2 new menu entries related do Babylon and FS.

Thanks for the explanation, I'll investigate this and let you know what I find.

It would seem to me that the SDK installer finds the location and version of 3ds Max in the registry regardless of where it was installed. You can verify this if the SDK installer shows your version of Max checked off for installation. I wonder what would happen if you ticked all the versions for installation.

I believe i'll create an "M20XX" folder for each version selected on the root of the drive 3ds max is installed.

Thanks for the clue of M2018. I found that on my F drive (very random loc.). As you recommended I copied the two folders into my main 3dsmax folder. As you predicted my tabs now include the flightsim and babylon folders.

The only concern I still have, is my materials library apparently doesn't contain the "flightsim" material, which I've seen in screenshots from the sdk. In the screenshots it ends up in the same material section as the "Physical material". Does that get installed via a tool in the drop down?

It's not a real solution, at least the sample onl files weren't where the SDK menus expected it.
