• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Convert Custom Ground Poly to Apron and vice versa

Hi Jon,
installed the 1.60 (Pro) now and make my first attempts with custom ground polys. They work fine in the first tests. It would be however great to convert the type of poly from apron to custom ground poly. Because the custom ground poly do not harden the surface, I need an underlying apron for them. So I would like to copy the apron poly and simply convert them to the custom ground polys and place them over the apron. Perhaps I missed something and there is another technique for hardening the surface?
Thanks for the great improvements of version 1.60. Very nice handling and a lot of new features.

There is no such feature at the moment but I imagine it would be quite straight forward to arrange. I have added it to the list.

Jorg, why would you cover an apron with a ground poly of exactly the same shape - other than, of course, to take advantage of the texture flexibility offered by ADE_GP? If you've flattened the terrain, the ground polys are drawn directly on the flatten. Why do you need additional hardening?

Thanks for your answers.
The reason why I want to have a second polygon on top is exactly the individual texture of the surface. With a custom ground poly I can make my own textures but this is not hardened. In the past I used Gmax-Polys and converted them with MCX. The problem is, that it is sometimes not easy to match all the polys exactly on top of the taxiways/apron made by ADE.
When I could do both individual textures and taxiways/apron with ADE it would be faster for me to finish the ground layout.

Perhaps it would be possible to add a parameter which hardens the surface of a custom ground poly and simply adds a poly layer automatically, just dreaming

Unfortunately not - at least not in ADE_GP. (There is no provision in the FS8 GP "technology" for hardening.) But, it is the need for additional hardening that mystifies me. ADE ground polys are (or should be) drawn on a flattened surface. Aren't flattened surfaces already "hard"?

Are you attempting to place these ground polys at other than the flattened terrain elevation?

Hi Don,
no the flatten itself doesn´t harden the surface and this is what I want.
The surface of the flatten is a grass surface around the apron and taxiways so the airplane that leaves the taxiway is driving over grass.
For a big airport it really doesn´t make a difference because you wouldn´t leave the taxiway with a Boeing or an Airbus. For small airfields it is different, because even parking lots are on grass.
So the general surface is grass and I have to harden the surface of aprons and taxiways with polygons in ADE. Only to get a better optical result I used Gmax-poly/MCX in the past and would like to do everything with ADE in the future because of better positioning possibilities.

Thanks. I understand (I think). I gather that FS adds a roughness factor based on apron material. So you want to underlay the ground poly with an asphalt (or other smooth) surface to get rid of the bumps.

There's still nothing I can do in ADE_GP, but it appears Jon can handle the issue (as you suggest) in ADE itself.

Thanks for the answer, you are right it must be a feature of ADE itself not ADE_GP.
My only thought with the previous remark was, that with a "parameter" in the GP menü ADE could automatically underly a standard poly with hardening effect. But it would make live even a bit more comfortable, with a copy method I would be happy too.
