• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

DA42 - Next steps recomendation

Hello guys :)

I am modelling a DA42 for xplane (it will be later exported to blender -> xplane). I have been thinking to go on with the fin and elevators or the wings but either way how should I go on with them? Shall I extrude from the fuselage or make a new object like for the nose? If they are a new object, shall I then connect them to the fuselage and arrange quads?

Here is what I have until now, without much attention to details.
Thank you a lot in advance :)

I would make the wings as a separate object. You can always make a fairing if you aren't happy with the 'wings-on-body' part (where the wings are attached to the fuselage).

I don't know what you mean with quads, so that question I can't answer ;(

Hoi,
I have started to try out, is this what you mean?
thank you :)

Oh btw,
quads, tris, n-gons.. are vertex united forming a face :) quads = 4 vertex; tris = 3 vertex ; ngons = multiple

Yep, that's it. Now you can shape it the way you want it. I haven't merged my fuselage with wings, I don't think it is nessecary.

Aha, I understand. (I see a lot of expressions and words I don't know, but I use the 'meaning' quite often :D)

Good luck!

Thanks!!
I have decided to go with splines instead of starting from primitives.. More freedom :)

Be careful with splines: make sure you're using the same number of vertices per spline in each iteration. If that is hard to grasp, the idea is to make sure you're able to connect each vertex on all the splines to a corresponding one on the next spline out from the fuselage. Otherwise you wind up with mesh errors and odd triangles.

Hey guys, I have re-made the topology quite some times because I was unhappy with it but I am still struggling... How do I get accurate airfoils?? what recomendations for the engine should I follow?
thank you very much :)

This is the airfoil from which they say it is the one for the DA42:
http://airfoiltools.com/airfoil/details?airfoil=fx63137-il
It gives you a picture with the right shape.
On the engine, I can only say that they look quite difficult to model. I thing this will be a trial-and-error thing ;( Just start with the front and try to model it all the way to the back. Not happy? Try it the other way around. Still not happy? Start somewhere in the middle of the engine.

Suc6!
