• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.

P3D v4 Do I lower airport to match ground elevation, or raise ground to meet runway?

Afternoon,

Trying to update a stock airport. When I check the new airport in the sim, the runway appears to be ‘floating’ above the ground. Floating isn’t the right word. The runway, taxiways, and aprons are raised up on a plateau, but everything else is down at ground level.

The elevation my airport should be 64.92 meters, but ground level is 54.86 meters. I can lower the airport 10 meters, but that wouldn’t match its real world elevation. Can I raise the ground up to the airport? If so, what’s the best way to do this? My guess is the former would be the easiest of the two.

Thanks,

Colin

So long as the two elevations are the same, there's no technical reason to favor one over the other. For my own airports, I consider the surrounding terrain and do whichever creates the fewest/smallest changes along the edge of the flatten.

But, it you choose to change ARP elevation, don't forget to put an elevation "stub" in Scenery\World\scenery.

If you change ARP elevation from its value in the stock airport, you must put a small .bgl in the Scenery\World\scenery to tell Flightsim about the change. This file is known as an "elevation stub, and ADE will create and place it for you. If you don't have the stub, Flightsim will display the airport at the old ARP elevation.

If you want to know the details about the file, do a search on "elevation stub" in the ADE forum. There have been numerous threads on the topic. As well, I'm sure its mentioned in the ADE manual.
