• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Environment Reflections on exterior reflective materials

Hey all,

The only way I know of to make reflections on the wings and fuselage of my planes is via the reflection maps.

Is.... it... possible... to reflect the 'real environment?'

I have no idea if anythings is different from scenery design, but try adding cube map, p3d v4 supports dynamic reflections, add specular map I think to the wing and fuselage texture, set your settings in ModelConverterX correctly.

It sure is - but not within FSX. It says so right in the FSX SDK:

It is certainly possible to generate real-time updating cubic maps, but this would require processor cycles and a constantly updating texture buffer; both of which would have detrimental effects on performance.

So, yeah, it was too prohibitive 13 years ago when FSX came out, but with new graphics hardware these days, it probably wouldn't be as much. It would definitely require access to code base, and it seems P3D has done just that. You CAN define your own cube maps - I've done it, but the process is quite involving.

Bill, IIRC, you just compile your mdl calling the default reflection map, then in P3D you go to Options > Lighting (!?) and turn Dynamic Reflections ON to something at least Medium. And hey presto, at least on my rig, you get them. Place yourself close to the markings of a runway and see if they are reflected. If not, let me know, I'll re-check here. Mind you, the effect isn't all that overwhelming, and possibly costly frameratewise.

As Mjahn said, for P3D (I'm still on V3) it's simple. The thing to keep in mind is that you will need to have a different material for things that reflect in the interior model.
