Hi,
I don't fully understand the concept of exclusion rectangles and things don't appear to be working as they should, so I could use some clarification. This is FS2004.
I started with the stock LOWZ airport (Zel Am See, Austria). Nothing terribly special. One runway in a one horse town! All views are from the south looking north:
In early September I edited LOWZ by adding two grass runways off to the north of the stock runway. Placed in an area that already had autogen trees, those same trees simply occupied my new runways, as well as a good portion of the east half of my apron.
(At this point, note that I erroneously failed to save my initial edit in the form of an .ad2 file, but rather just went straight to .bgl compilation, and saved it as a single .bgl file):
Last night, I opened my edited .bgl file from September, and attempted to get rid of the auto gen trees on the apron and the grass runways by using exclusion rectangles. (Note that I tried this before I read page 170 of the .pdf manual which clearly states that exclusion rectangles are NOT for removing autogen objects). I applied the rectangles as indicated in this ADE diagram:
I checked the box "all"... which I'm going to presume includes all the components listed below that I circled? :
I again forgot to save my new (October) changes as an .ad2 file, and went straight to .bgl compilation. The new .bgl overwrote the one from September. The end result is shown below:
Note that even though it wasn't supposed to work, the exclusion rectangles did indeed remove the auto gen trees! However, also note that even though I checked "all" in the edit menu (which included "generic buildings" in its list of things to include in the exclusion), my generic buildings (lined up along the north side and SE corner of the apron), did NOT disappear as they were supposed to. And additionally-- though it's not shown here-- my first exclusion rectangle I drew (which covered the entire airport), DID remove the control tower and the small fuel island on the south side of the apron.
So my questions are these:
1) In my case, why DID my exclusion rectangles remove the autogen trees, when Mr. Masterson's manual said they're not supposed to?
2) Why DIDN'T the exclusion rectangles remove the generic buildings I placed on the apron-- even though "generic buildings" was one of the criteria included in the selection of "all" in the Exclusion Properties menu?
3) Why did my original exclusion rectangle (not shown in my images) remove the stock control tower and fuel pumps, when ironically the tower and fuel pumps don't appear in my ADE9x diagram for the airport? (Please note that the pink "circle-T" on the apron indicates tower view and not tower object).
Guesses on my part:
In an attempt to try to answer my own questions... Could it be that much of the inconsistencies I'm experiencing regarding exclusion rectangles comes from the fact that I'm not opening my airport in an .ad2 file that I had saved, and adding my exclusion rectangles to it; but rather I opened an already compiled .bgl and added the exclusions to it instead?
Might that be why my generic buildings appear to be permanent & exempt from the effects of the exclusion rectangles?
Though, that still doesn't explain why the auto gen trees disappeared, as well as the stock tower and fuel pumps.
Could it be that the items I added and then compiled the airport straight to .bgl were the things that were exempt from later exclusion? While the items that were already there before I started my September editing, were still subject to exclusion?
I don't mean to belabor relatively trivial details. I'm just still trying to figure out how all this works, and why there appears to be some inconsistencies in how processes are applied.
Thank you for your time,
