FS2002 gamepack ground polys

I was wondering who 'invented' this technique? It has certainly been responsible for some major advances in scenery realism, and if it doesn't survive the transition to the next FS version, I would at least like to know who to thank before it disappears into history:)

Does FSX handle ground polys differently, being the round earth thing and all? I will eventually need to cross that bridge. You're right though, once you master it, it's a great technique.

FSX sort of works the same. SP1 introduced a 'fix' for the round earth problem, where as long as your ground planes are divided up into smaller sections (<100m?) they work ok. However any textures other than DXT1 don't handle scenery or aircraft shadows well.
There is a suggestion that this method works with DX10, whereas FS2004 output doesn't. So we can continue to use this method for the time-being. Of course with the next sim version, all bets are off.

Hi Robin,

That is a good question, I have no idea who really invented this. I know it is my tutorial that is most referred to on this site, but I don't think I can claim it as my technique. In the end it is just a translation of the old SCASM code with the LayerCall command that we used to use a lot in the past. I think it was on the AvSim scenery design forum years ago that we found out that with some simple tweak the Fs2002 GMax output could be made the same, so that it would produce proper ground polygons.
