• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Planner

Hi all,

I have been viewing these forums for some time, but this is my first post. :)

I am developing a CAD application to develop airports and scenery for FSX. It is about half way finished and is currently undergoing beta testing.

It reads the xml file format used by FSX, and then creates the appropriate bgl files for you. I've attached a screen shot of it.

This is to let people know that it should be avileble fairly soon, and to invite people to be beta testers. We already have some people beta testing it, but more testers are always a good thing.

This is a great forum and I hope to be able to contribute to it!

Hi Russell,

I don't think I understand you. Isn't this exactly what BGLComp does?

All bglcomp.exe does is compile an xml which you had to hand write.

FSX Planner allows you to graphically create/alter and aiport, then creates the xml for you and compiles it with bglcomp.exe.

If you want some beta testers the best way is leaving your tool available for download. You will receive a lot of suggestions to improve your application, for sure.

José

Thanks Russell, there was no mention of graphical creation in you first post. However, the attachment did hint at this.

I am certainly willing to do some testing for you.

George

Afcad3?!

Russel it looks great! Can't wait to use it. Take your time to carry on the good job!
If you need extra beta testers, let me know.

Er, what else would a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program be if not "graphical?" :D

This should be excellent news, rf360m.

We know that Scruffyduck is also working on a graphical interface for SDE

Could we end up with two rival programs - or will they do different tasks?

Is collaboration an option?

Cheers
Chris

This is great news!!

How far along is the program and feel free to put the beta up here, you'll have more than enough people checking it out.

Is this competion for SDE? A little competition could be good for the consumer :)

Is this completion for SDE? A little competition could be good for the consumer

See my post above which says:

We are talking to each other

That being the developers of FSX Planner and the developer of SDE (me :) )

I think there are some areas in tool development where consumers should have a choice - we all have preferences and ways of doing things and I for one like to see more than one solution to a problem. Generally this boils down to functionality and the end user experience. In other cases there is no point in re-inventing the wheel and so it makes a lot of sense to co-operate. Bear in mind that SDE is a scenery design engine that models the innards of scenery files (bgl and xml for example). It already has three user clients (SDE TestApp, Bgl2Xml and Bgl2Xml GUI) and will certainly get more over time.

Jon has been incredibly helpful and forthcoming with his ideas. I know I am looking forward to collaborating more with him on this and possibly other applications as well! :)

Rather interested in this... will it read existing BGL's? Also, will it link to FSX like AFCAD used to, so you can put your aircraft at a point in FSX and it will show that position on the CAD screen?

If you're after a tester, drop me a line.

Cheers

Actually... I need to edit the ones I've got :D

Good choice of smillie by the way Paul!

This (along with SDE) is exactly what the FSX (and FS11?) developer community needs.....Its great that we have people willing and able to provide these tools

May Allah bless your camels ;)

Will it be free? Any update on progress?

Regards
Tim

I am very happily pleased with all the interest in this application!

Here's an update.

I have just released the first beta to about 6 or 7 testers. I decided not to release it as a beta to the entire community for this release because this is the first time it is being tested by people other than those on the development team. As there could be some large bugs I want to get those taken care of before releasing it to the general population.

I'm aiming for the next release to be general beta, or possibly the one after that, we'll see. :)

It will be a freely available app. Of course if you want to pay we won't stop you!

With Jon's help it should be able to read directly from the bgl files.

We haven't decided if it will interface directly with FSX yet.

I hope that answers some questions. :)
