• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Rocky textures in mountain slopes

Hi!

Were can I find the parameters defining that some textures become in a rocky textures in high slopes?

The sloped textures are defined in the LCLookup BGL. We can't change them, and we can't write a new LCLookup.

I think Holger Sandmann had a spreadsheet describing what textures are used for each texture's slope.

Hi,
Actually, it is possible to make some changes to lclookup.bgl but changing it for the specific needs of one scenery would probably make a mess of other sceneries.
Since I am still working on an improved lclookup.bgl, I am interested in hearing what you would like to change. If this is something that can improve terrain rendering worldwide, then, I'd be happy to make the change for you.

I ask this because I understand, —after reading Luis Feliz Tirado documents— that there is a water texture with this capability —become a rock on a certain slope condition— identified with the name "ocean_sea_large_lake_0". Is it true?, and what are the file name of this texture and the name of the water texture used for the alpha channel masking?

If you define a photoreal alpha as water, it will climb slopes if the mesh slopes under it. If you wish to avoid the water climbing slopes, then alter the alpha shape, so it doesn't cover the slopes, before you compile the photoreal.

Photoreal should conform to the mesh fairly well... if not, then either the mesh or photoreal is badly out of position.

Also I think Phil Taylor of ACES is on record that the way water texture reacts to slopes will be changed in SP1, so it probably isn't good to depend on the current behaviour. (Or maybe just the rivers will be "resloped" -- not sure.)

Yes, as Scott notes, the alternate terrain.cfg that Luis and I have promoted may not be needed after the FSX SP1 patch... or we may have to issue a new update!

I think we'll see the patch within 6-8 weeks, so I wouldn't consider any scenery "final" for this interim period. We may find some significant changes that will need attention.

SOME rivers have been re-sloped (i.e. Thames). SOME missing rivers have been found (i.e. Danube). I'm not aware of any changes to how water texture reacts to slopes.

So, in SOME areas the alternate terrain.cfg that some are using will no longer be needed. I'm sure there will still be areas with problems important enough to some people to keep it in place. There are places where the default terrain.cfg file generates more desirable results than the alternate.

The areas that got attention were carefully chosen, taking into consideration such criteria as number of affected users (how many people will actually see the fix) and impact on the download size of the patch. For some our decisions will be praised, for others... unfortunately it's difficult to make everyone completely happy.
