FSX Gauge buttons too bright!

Hi folks, I have been working on the night lighting on my latest project and I dimmed down the white backlighting on the text on the pedestal as it was way too bright but now the lighting on the AP head is too bright and I would like to tone it down too. I believe this AP unit was made by Roman Stoviak (at least he put it into the Boxcar panel) but I obviously can't ask him about it as he's no longer with us :( .

I have cracked open the CAB file and the textures are all 8-bit BMP files but no matter what I try I can't seem to get them to be less bright. Either it refuses to save if I try a different shade of white/grey or it corrupts and look pixelated in the sim.

There are some screenshots below and you can see how much brighter the buttons are than the surrounding text.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Ideally I would like the entire head, buttons, text and rolling digits to be several shades dimmer. For reference the buttons turn yellow when active.

Firstly I'd try just reducing the saturation, (make the colours less "brilliant"), but without a sight of the problematic files it's difficult to suggest anything else.
What procedure are you using to update the bmps and/or cabs?

I will try the de-saturation trick and see what happens.

I was trying to edit them in Photoshop and I have unpacked the cab so that I could swap out the files and then once it was working I was going to use 'Cabdir.exe' to re-pack them.

I turned down the saturation by -20 and it looks much better now. The buttons are better matched to the other equipment. Thanks for that tip Chris. 👍 🍻
