• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I am very pleased to announce the general release of Terrain Sculptor. It's been a while getting to this stage due to the limited number of beta testers. But, I'm confident we've got a better product because of the long beta.

Terrain Sculptor version 1.1.00 has just been posted to http://stuff4fs.com. New users can obtain it by navigating to the Applications/Terrain Sculptor page and click the General Release menu item. Current users of TS will be notified the update is available the next time they run TS.

I am particularly pleased to tell you that this release allows you to import existing FSX flatten .bgls. Thanks to Patrick Germain's CVX Extractor - which Patrick has allowed me to integrate - all you have to do is navigate to the .bgl and click the Import button, allowing you to embellish (for your own use) addon airports created by others. This feature also provides an interim method for importing flattens from your ADE files.

Currently, there's no equivalent import method for FS9 flattens other than importing their sBuilder .sbx files. I hope to add a FS9 .bgl importer in the near future. As well, Jon Matheson and I are planning an interface to ADE.

Enjoy,
Don

I have just uploaded Terrain Sculptor Version 1.1.01. It includes an importer for FS9 flatten .bgls. While developing the importer, I discovered a minor problem in the FS9 compiler. It is fixed in this version.

New users can obtain the new version by navigating to the Applications/Terrain Sculptor page and click the General Release menu item. Current users of TS will be notified the update is available the next time they run TS.

At long last I've found the time to implement some much-needed enhancements to Terrain Sculptor. The list is long (please see the Version History in the archive). But two items of most interest are:
  • contour lines - the use for which is obvious, and
  • variable elevation strips intended to be used, among other things, as road bases (to ensure the displayed roadway is not affected by sharply changing slopes on either side), ridge lines or gullies.
The need for this new capability quickly became apparent when I attempted to use Terrain Sculptor to update my CYYJ, which is located on an elevated plateau between two bodies of water with a small mountain to the south and some undulating terrain to the north.

As well, I fixed an number of minor issues with the previous version - and a couple not-so-minor ones.

The result is Development Release 1.1.02, now available at http://stuff4fs.com. Please give it a try and report any issues.

Having used it extensively over the past couple of weeks, I am confident that this development release is at least as stable as the latest general release. So, even if you don't need the new features, it's worth downloading the new version to get rid of some bugs.

Enjoy,
Don

Having used the earlier development release for my own scenery, I realized some further functional enhancements were necessary. Specifically, all contour types, i.e.,
  • closed, flat
  • open, flat
  • closed, variable elevations,
  • open, variable elevations
are available in the latest development release, which also includes a number of fixes for bugs that previously eluded detection. Since all contour types are now handled identically, the program should be even easier to use.

Development Release 1.2.00 is now available at http://stuff4fs.com.

Given the absence of adverse comments and issues identified with Version 1.2.02, I have promoted it to a general release.

I have just posted Development Release 1.2.05 to http://stuff4fs.com. It fixes several recently-discovered issues with importing .bgl files and with the handling of changes to terrain type.

If you have selected uploading of new development releases at startup, this new release should be "discovered" automatically. If you haven't, go to the noted website, navigate to the User Applications/Terrain Sculptor and click on the Development Release menu item.

If no further issues are reported in the next week or so, I'll promote Version 1.2.05 as the next general release.

I have just posted a new general release (1.2.06) to http://stuff4fs.com. The new release is identical to Development Release 1.2.05 with one exception. That is, the new release reverts to using Microsoft.FlightSimulator.SimConnect.dll Version 10.0.60905.0. If FSX has ever been installed on your system, this version is probably already available. If not, or Windows throws an exception complaining it can’t find that file, you may install it by executing SimConnect.msi from either:
  • FSX SDK\Core Utilities Kit\Simconnect SDK\Legacy Interfaces\FSX-RTM, or
  • P3D\redisst\Interface\FSX-RTM\retail\lib.
The previous versions of Terrain Sculptor used Microsoft.FlightSimulator.SimConnect.dll Version 10.0.61259.0. Unfortunately, P3D users who have never installed FSX would have difficulty in obtaining that version whereas Version 10.0.60905.0, the FSX-RTM version is included with P3D.

Enjoy,
Don

Those of you following this forum will have noticed a flurry of activity over the past few days regarding the inability of Terrain Sculptor to run in a FS9-only environment - a long-standing and very elusive issue. We were successful in isolating the cause and I have made a new general release 1.2.07 at http://stuff4fs.com. It should be detected automatically the next time you run Terrain Sculptor.

My utility SlewMaster suffered from the same malady. I have updated it as well. You can obtain the updated version from http://stuff4fs.com (navigate to Developer Utilities),

Enjoy,

I have just uploaded the first general release of TS Pro (correcting the last reported problem in the earlier development release) to http://stuff4fs.com. It should be discovered automatically the next time you start TS Pro - assuming you have enabled the automatic update option.

I have just posted Version 2.1.02 to http://stuff4fs.com. It addresses several recently-identified issues (see the included Version History). In particular, in the previous release I made what I thought was a simple, isolated change to add "Exclude All" (guid 0000...) to terrain menus. Turns out that change had a number of unanticipated side effects. I fixed all those side effects I could identify.

As well, this release includes what I expect will be a handy new function - the ability to change the terrain assignment of a poly without using the Edit Poly function. Now, when you select a terrain in the Terrain Type combobox, if any nodes are then selected you are asked if you want to change the terrain assignment of those nodes. You can even change the assignment of a whole poly by selecting any node in that poly, right-clicking to bring up the context menu, checking Select Peer Nodes and then selecting the desired new terrain type.

It's been a while since I've made a general release of TS Pro. I have just done so (Version 2.1.5.1) You can get it as http://stuff4fs.com. There was an issue with the automatic update feature (now fixed), so the new release is unlikely to be discovered for you.

The new release contains a variety of fixes, all noted in the enclosed Version History.

I recently became aware that PV5 added a few new terrain types. But, I also discovered that even though you selected the PV5 terrain.cfg file as your source, those new terrain names were not displayed in the terrain combo-box.

I have just posted General Release 2.1.5.5 which fixes that issue - and a few others that have been discovered "along the way".

If this new release is not detected the next time you start TS Pro, you can download it directly from http://stuff4fs.com.

I have just posted a new General Release (2.1.7.0) at http://stuff4fs.com.

I have been using TS Pro in the development of my update to CYYJ and discovered several "fringe" issues while doing so. I categorize them as "fringe" issues because you would be unlikely to experience them unless you were working near the limits of TS Pro. Nonetheless, it's still unpleasant when they occur.

If you are using a recent release of TS Pro, this new release should be discovered automatically the next time you start-up. If it's not, you can download directly from the website.

Release 2.1.7.1 has just been posted to http://stuff4fs.com

I have recently discovered that, due to a deficiency in 3rd party application XML2SHP used by AIFP in the compile process, TS Pro is unable to compile freeways. You may add them to your projects, but they will not compile properly. I have added warning messages whenever freeways are encountered in your data.

I will attempt a fix for this issue in the near future. But, due to TS Pro's the apparently-limited user base, I will need to consider the level of effort involved if it turns out to be a complex undertaking. If all else fails, sBuilderX will create and compile freeways.
