• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS [GUIDE] How to create custom aerial scenery

Fantastic guide, thank you so much.

I’ve just one question. The airport I’m attempting to make is missing due to cloud cover on the Bing imagery causing the automatic creation of synthetic textures/polygons to cover them. Inserting my custom imagery works correctly, but the vegetation from these synthetic polygons remains. Do I need an exclude rectangle to remove these, and will they prevent the automatic vegetation from being applied to my imagery? If so, is there a better way to handle this?
Norman, in the ground poly with the excludes, select vegetation and then adjust the slider that appears to zero. :)

Guys, help me. Everything made according to the tutorial. What am I doing wrong? It's about the white border of the edited tiles.

If you made everything according to the tutorial as you say, then my best guess is that your edited .png file is the source of the problem

Hi Augustin, hi Devinci,

I'm still not that familiar whith the MSFS SDK, I just succeeded in creating a simple new airport with a single runway and without an aerial scenery.

Augustin, I appreciate your comprehensive workout. However, Devinci, I also like the shortcut you proposed via SBuilderX and GIMP.
In old FSX and P3Dv4 times I didn't use SBuilderX but FSEarthTiles. Finally it creates a .bgl for direct use in FSX or P3D which cannot be used for MSFS.
In an intermediate step FSEarthTiles also creates, as SBuilderX does, a rectangular .bmp and a text file containing the exact corner coordinates of the rectangle.
Now my question: Is with the existance of the .bmp and the corner coordinates geo-referencing done already? At which step of Augustin's tutorial I have to step into it and continue with it?

Thanks for your help in advance, and best regards,

Joachim

Seems like the 2 scenery packages interfere with eachother somehow. it only works if i have 1 of them active in The community folder.

Not sure if its a bug or not made quite a big file, the cgl aerial imagery folder is 4,67gb. Left it overnight and now the Package size is around 280gb and not even completed. is there a size limit of this and it just flips out ?

If you create a big area (for example 5x5 km) with z22 then you should rent a personal server for storing this data) Of course you should understand what size you will get at the end and choose an area and zoom carefully.

Sorry I just noticed your message since I wasn't quoted. Basically you use SbuilderX to just get a singular image instead of the many tiles you get from Ortho4xp. it's easier that way you don't have to stich all the images together in gimp and it can save you time. So I'd say about page 20 (4 – Importing, georeferencing and exporting in QGIS) you can continue.

How can I do this with 4 complete Ortho4XP tiles? When I hit "Make Geotiffs" after I've selected the area with the point tool, Ortho4XP just creates one tif file. Selecting every square of the whole area is extremely handy, especially on ZL 19, to do but this works (tried it with ~100 marked areas).
Is there a way to do this more easily? Or is there a way to use generated Orthophotos to create MSFS scenery? I'm having 500-1000 Orthophots with 4096x4096 resolution, do I need to combine them manually or is there a tool for this?

Reason: I want to create the forgotten Faroe islands.

Just what I was looking for! Thanks so much, really well written, no problems to follow at all :D Managed to replace some scenery with no trouble :)

Now I want to create a couple smaller seperate areas and place them into one FS project. Should I just place everything into "aerial_images" and mix the png's or should I start creating some folder structure inside to keep the png's organized?

Great tutorial, thank you. I can't seem to make it work in South Beach, Miami, could I be doing something wrong or is there some trick to it?

The default airports that are in-game is based on Bing Aerial imagery, which tends to not be that accurate. Or, your georefrencing is not good enough
That's weird. Never had problem with p3d and xplane, also the buildings are in offset so it must be the photo real. I'm trying to use it the TIF image instead of the PNG.
++++++++++++++ edit
With the GeoTiff is working fine.

the problem is that I've lost my blend mask, any help?
