ModelConverter X and SketchUp

Hello, I'm relatively new to scenery modelling; I've tried Modelconverter X and i've been able to export Collada files into MCx and then into FSX

However now I need to do the REVERSE process, i have some .mdl files that i need to import into Sketchup for editing. I've tried passing through the .3ds format but the model loses all its textures.

Is there a way that I can import .mdl files into Sketchup (or export them as COLLADA with ModelConverterx) ?

Thanks

Hi,

Exporting to COLLADA is not (yet) possible.

It should work with the 3DS format, but you will probably have to convert your textures to PNG or plain BMP so that SketchUp can also read them. And the textures need to be in the same folder as the 3DS file when you import it.

Hi

Thank you for the reply, but no luck unfortunately. I've exported the .mdl as .3ds with modelconverter and converted the .dds textures to .bmp, but sketchup still wouldn't see those textures

Did you put all files in the same folder?

Also be aware that the 3DS format only stores short filenames (8.3 character format).

You might be able to do something similar to what we do with 3DS files in GMAX. Try opening the Material Editor in Sketchup (whatever it is called - the paint bucket button, as I remember) and check each material in the model. You should be able to reassign the texture file to each material, and have them show up on your model again.

Hope this helps,
