• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

My first self-created .bgl lets the FSX crash [Screenshots and files attached]

Hi,

at first I started SBuilder, loaded the background air image of the airport and excluded the autogen with an exclude polygon - Image: http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/769/edlg1eq2.jpg
I saved this as EDLG1.bgl (look at attachment).

Then I started FSXPlanner and created an new airport (It isn't in default FSX). I took the coordinates from this from the official charts. I just placed runway and tower, just to test it. I left Airport Test Radius at 1m, because I don't know what it does. Image: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2141/edlg2mc6.jpg
I saved this as EDLG2.xml and compiled it to EDLG2.bgl (look at attachment).

After placing those two .bgls in the Addon Scenery Folder, FSX loads up with no problems. I can see EDLG in the airport list, but as soon as I choose it, FSX reports a problem and shuts down.

What did I do wrong? If you want to test the files yourself or just have a look at it - They are attached.

Excuse my English, I am German.

Thanks and hoping for help,
Oli.

I agree - BglComp will sometimes compile bad taxipoints and paths but they will crash on load to FS. FSX Planner has some tools to clean up bad taxi data.

To add my two cents - I agree with the views above. I'd try removing the two taxiway points. They aren't used for anything and have no associated taxiways, so they may be causing the problem.

Also, the indexes on the taxiway points are not sequential. Does anyone know if this matters or not?

Hi,
thanks, this helped, working now!
Does this mean that I can not create taxiways? Or is there only a problem if they are there alone with no use?
Can anyone tell me what Airport Test Radius means?

Thanks
Oli

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what Airport Test Radius means?

Thanks
Oli

I have a limited understanding of it based on my experience with bglcomp.

Airport Test Radius appears to be a distance from the ARP (Airport Reference Point) that bglcomp uses to determine if objects are inside, or outside it's bounds.

If an object within your <Airport> header is outside of this radius, then bglcomp will warn you of this when you compile.

If an object within your <Airport> header is inside of this radius, then bglcomp will produce no such warning.

I think the reason for the Airport Test Radius check is to make sure all of your objects are where they are supposed to be. Probably Microsoft put this error-check in because they used lots of automated data processing to prepare FS data....and wanted to make SURE that everything in the <Airport> header really went with that particular airport.

Possibly there is a performance reason also, but that is beyond my knowledge.

You can create taxiways. A taxiway consists of two taxiway points and a taxiway path connecting them.

The easiest way to create a taxiway from scratch is to use the taxiway tool within FSX Planner. This tool looks like a small bar with a large dot on each end. Select that tool, then click where you want the taxiway to start, then drag the mouse to where you want the taxiway to end. FSX Planner will then create the taxiway points and the taxiway for you.

If you want to use existing taxiway points and create taxiways between them, then using the taxiway tool, click on the first taxiway point and drag the mouse to the second taxiway point. This will create aa taxiway between two taxiway points.

That is a very brief overview of how to create a taxiway. You can specify the type of taxiway, the surface of the taxiway as well as several other properties of the taxiway. If you have any questions just ask.

Mace's description of the Airport Test Radius is correct.

Thanks,
this really helps! I will try this as soon as I get home from school.
Another question - Yesterday I tried to create a boundary fence. I remember trying to draw a line with leftclick-and-drag but this didn't work. What do the "-", "+" and " " mean over the cursor? I can't tell exactly what didn't work, as I don't have FSXPlanner in front of me right now.

Thanks

The + and - cursors used to be the add and remove vertex cursors in versions prior to 16. In 16 we got rid of these in favor or simply shift clicking to add a vertex to and existing fence and control clicking to remove one.

So to create a boundary just select the fence tool, then click where you want the first vertex to be, move to the next location and click there, etc. When you are done double click at the last point.

To add a vertex to an existing fence, use the fence tool and shift click where you want the new vertex to be. To remove an existing vertex, control click on that vertex.
