• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Oh, The Bounty of Modeling

In 55 knots of wind Bounty would be hove-to under storm jib and trysail only. That's a violent storm or near-hurricane!

These are the guidelines I am using:

Code:
Beaufort scale Speed knots mph, km/h sail lore

0 calm <1 <1 no steering way

1 light air 1-3 1-3, 1-5 just steering way

2 light breeze 4-6 4-7, 6-11 full sail, 1-2 knots

3 gentle breeze -10 8-12, 12-19 full sail, 3-4 knots

4 moderate breeze 11-16 13-17, 20-28 full sail, 5-6 knots

5 fresh breeze 17-21 18-24, 29-38 + royals

6 strong breeze 22-27 25-30, 39-49 + full topgallants

7 high wind 28-33 31-38, 50-61 + reefed topgallants

8 gale 34-40 39-46, 62-74 + topsails

9 strong gale 41-47 47-54, 75-88 + reefed topsails, courses

10 storm 48-55 55-63, 89-102 + double reefed topsails and reefed courses

11 violent storm 55-63 64-73, 103-117 storm sails only

12 hurricane             => 64            => 74, => 118    no sails

I have not yet implemented changing sails based on wind speeds.

 Ah, one Beaufort strength adrift. Not weather for full sails anyway, much creaking and groaning of timbers.

The idea in that test was to check roll in wind conditions. I need to know where my limits are.
I have not yet implemented sail config changes for wind speeds.

Ultimately, high winds, and sail conditions will agree thereby avoiding such catastrophes.

Miton,

That sim looks brilliant. I watched that clip yesterday and was impressed.

Just wondering here. Do they have an SDK and can you make ships for that?

Nigel is wrapping up the baseHMS Bounty hull textures with a few minor tweaks as I continue to work on animations and gauge functions.

Sailing through Ketchikan with a stiff breeze (actually a gale force wind coming in per the beaufort scale). I have the top gallants dropped in this shot to ease the masts pressure and to avoid the possibility of a snap roll. Just testing animations here folks, hiding the top gallants and showing them stowed. :)

We are trying to find the right balance in high winds and sail combinations to avoid snap rolls ... making progress, but if you abuse her, you will get wet. :)

I would never have been able to be a sailor on one of those. I get chills just imagining myself at the top gallant level on the masts! :yikes:

Hi Bill.

Clunked on the head, and pressed into service, you'd climb up there to avoid the lash!

LOL Bill, and rhumbaflappy. But, someone has to change the flag, clew/keel/furl the sails, or replace the foot ropes. :)

Check this pic for an OMG factor. :-O

I just finished animating all the foot ropes to swing in the breeze and got the show/hide of top gallants working properly.
Try to sort out how to have a bit of animation in the sail yards but I have run against parts limits.

Next will determine just how best to do sail management (manual or auto) based on wind speeds. We can vary roll based on sail configuration and wind speed.
I need more expertise in how these configurations should be used, which sails to deploy/hide based on wind speeds and direction. Reading/research has not yet provided the answers I need.

Thank you Bryan; it's been a fun and challenging project, and more features yet to come to enhance realism. :-)

LOL; Or kiss the gunner's daughter...

We're now getting started on the 1789/90 texture set :)

Soon be time to don the gladrags and head for the Horn...

Milton,

If I may be permitted to count rivets for a second. I think you want to reverse the orientation of the White Ensign. Union jack quadrant towards the mast.

Doug, yes I cannot believe I did that; actually changed it yesterday. How embarrassing; and my apologies to the Crown and the good people of the UK. Salute!

Apologies accepted Milton, but the crew are muttering about keelhauling future offenders...

It really is an excellent model Milton. Looking forward to sailing her.

Thank you Doug. It's been a fun project and we have achieved much more than I thought possible. It's through the technical assistance of the great people here and Rob Barendregt for wind responses that it is possible. And of course, Nigel Richards artistic talent really brings the model to life. It's great to be surrounded by gifted and talented people. :-)

Milton :D
You are Awesome :D
I'm already a Proude owner of your DHC7, I'm waiting to be the Prounde Owner of the Bounty :D Keep it up :)

Maybe, one day you will make the 3 Sisterships? :) (Olympic, Britannic and Titanic)

Greetings, Aviana Scenery (Marc L)
