• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The OSGeo4W package installs GDAL, OGR, QGIS, and some more things to your computer. It has it's own shell for commandline operation that is quite handy. It automates the install using the internet to download the separate programs.

OGR deals with vector transformations and functions. GDAL deals with raster and elevation data. QGIS is a really nice freeware GIS program.

Arno and I can probably answer most questions users may have about the package.

Another good find for making mesh alterations is Wilbur. You can use Wilbur and the OSGeo4W package tools to create the elusive fantasy island.

I'll second that. Good package of tools that are helpful when working with GIS data for FS.

Wilbur won't install because I have a later version of the C++ 2010 (x86) Runtime Libraries.

As an update, if you install the recent stand-alone QGIS installation you will get the OSGeo4W command line tools (gdal, etc) as well. That might be easier than the OSGeo4W installer.

I installed OSGeo4W but without any supporting documentation (and a Help button that does nothing) I have no idea what to do when presented with this screen?

I found QGIS and will try that out ... but so far there isn't much detail information on these tools specific to what I need to bring a sat image into 3DSMax as a texture for a plane for airport object positioning references. I was using this Align image documentation and this GeoTiff documentation but key information such as where to get imagery and what type of imagery to get are missing.

There appears to be an assumed level of knowledge that I obviously don't have.

Cheers, Rob.
