• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D V5.4 - Samm looking for SDK Environment kit

After right clicking as admin of samm.exe, I tried locating a AI aircraft in P3DV5.4 to convert to a static ac.
After I located the aircraft I wanted to convert, a message stating environment kit could not be found

See the screen grab) - I do have the latest and greatest SDK for P3DV5,4 and:
1. I did a repair function
2. I did a uninstall and reinstall function.

To no avail did this Environment kit folder that SAMM was looking for could be found.
Google stated it had to be downloaded separately from P3D site
I did not find this and only the whole SDK package which I downloaded
and reinstalled. NO Environment kit folder to be seen.

I can't win for loosing - i.e. I tried MCX and now SAMM to create one lousy static aircraft and if it were not
for the bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

To resolve this, I would start by doing a Google search with the query string that is seen in the search field when you click this link:

https://www.google.com/search?clien...=1&pi=site: www.fsdeveloper.com SAMM SDK Path

Normally after installation, the versions of P3D SDK that were released after P3Dv1.4x (which are 64-Bit (aka "x64") will by default be found in the C:\Program Files\ sub-folder chain instead of the C:\Program Files (x86) sub-folder chain.

Having personally worked with the author of SAMM (Don Grovestine - R.I.P.) in the past on one of his other software projects, and having read the documentation for SAMM as well as having scanned FSDEV SAMM forum threads, i can attest to the fact that Don was very thorough, and had updated his code for compatibility with at least earlier releases of P3Dv5 shortly before his untimely passing.

So, if SAMM cannot find the P3Dv5 SDK, there may be an issue with where- and how- your copy of P3Dv5 SDK is installed.

It 'may' be due to Windows Security, but more likely it is due to another issue.

I am on the road presently, but if you read this before I return to my FS computer to verify the default path of the file SAMM is looking for, you should, IMHO check the GUI and PDF manual, to see if SAMM has a setup configuration dialog that allows you to manually browse or otherwise type in the path to the SDK file it is seeking.

First, I did a repair of SDK, then and uninstall of SDK and then install.....Its default install in on C drive, I opted for G: drive where rest of my P3DV5 resides, upon completion of install I searched for the missing
environment kit SAMM is looking for. It is not to be found. BTW, when I uninstalled SDK, I installed it on drive C: just to be nice and same results, no Environment kit folder. Google stated I could go to P3d
main site and download this kit Samm needs. Only file in the SDK department to download was the whole SDK program and not just an envoronment kit. So, here we are, dead in the water again......
CCR song....
stuck in lodi again......

The error message says that the required file is in the Modeling SDK/bin folder when dealing with P3D. Why are you looking for an Environment Kit folder?

The error message says that the required file is in the Modeling SDK/bin folder when dealing with P3D. Why are you looking for an Environment Kit folder?
Because, when I was trying to load an AI aircraft to convert to static, SAMM balked and said it could not find this Environment kit. Not my idea...... Evidently, it was or is a component of SDK.

The Environment Kit is a section by category that MS ACES originated in ESP before they licensed (sold?) the rights for use of that code set to Lockheed Martin for Prepar3D.

On nearly all web pages pertaining to LM P3D SDK, it is subdivided into sections, one of which is the "Environment Kit".

I have not checked recently to see if LM has once again taken web pages offline already for P3Dv5, as they seem to always be pushing people to only buy and use their latest version (currently P3Dv6), but normally they keep info online for at least (1) prior version in addition to their current numeric release.

After installation, latter versions of LM P3D SDK will have those sub-sections as a folder chain structure, including Environment Kit.

So, "A-Browsing-You- Go" to find the SDK utility you seek.

But, Don's code for SAMM 'should' have found it all by itself, so let's note that something is not working as it should, and make note to fix it later, if we can.

If you were successful in reinstalling P3Dv5 SDK, I suggest to find what you are looking for, that you install and use Windows File Search, or the latest version of a software utility front end for that Windows search and indexing engine, which is quite fast, and is called "Everything":

https://www.voidtools.com

Once installed, and it does its relatively brief initial indexing. enter as a search string the term modeldef.xml

Typically "EverythIng" can quickly find files / folders regardless of where they are on a computer or Local Area Network (aka "LAN"), and regardless of whether they are inside of Windows protected system or non-shared public folders.

Actually, I previously installed Everything a few moons ago, anyhow, a everything search reveled a copy of the modelef.xml noted in attached.
SAMM was unable to "sniff" this out so how do I tell samm where to fine it also, I never did fine a folder named environment kit.
I presume this is what SAMM was looking for.

I could probably discern this and tell you after I return to my office early this afternoon (Chicago time), as I am still on the road.

UPDATED: P3D SDK versions after 1.4x do NOT utilize \Environment Kit sub-folder chain structure when installed; SAMM's docs do not mention this.

I was able to successfully create a folder(s) replete with the xml file SAMM was looking for. Why SDK unpacked the xml file to location it did is beyond me.

At any rate I think I made a static aircraft, now I am trying to find where it is located.

Everything Search string: *.MDL ...should show all such files with that extension; click column headers to sort with most recent dates at top.
