• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.

Hi Donald,

Look'n good - sir - sounds like your project is even more ambitious than mine... You chose a much larger airport... I plan on incorporating many of the same features you mentioned - in my "county" airport as well... No commercial air terminals to worry about - whew... I'm glad I'm not the only one still working with FS9...
:)

I never realized Washington had spots so dry...

Just a great tool that helped me - have you seen "Metrix" to color match your photo scenery to whatever ground texture you use outide your photo tiles ? It worked wonders on my images and made a vast improvement... I haven't worked it yet - but - I plan on masking the squared edges of my photo tile border with a blend to remove the hard edges... That's one of my primary goals - to insure my scenery blends well with the surrounding terrain...

Quick question on Ground Polys if you don't mind ? I plan on possibly doing the runways and maybe some side walks as ground polys... I've read Bill Womacks tutorial and I believe I've got the basics down... One question - do ground polys ALWAYS have to be placed with specifying coordinates - or is there a way to make the model where you can position the ground poly with one of the placement tools available ??

Here is a link to some pix of my work in progress - if interested - I'm up to 25 LOD13 tiles now worth of photo scenery via Resampler (thanks to Jim): http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?259873-Improving-my-little-corner-of-the-world

Keep up the good work...
:)

Regards,
Scott

Hey Scott,

I to think it's great to see fs9 still being very viable in the Sim world and other
projects for the Sim
.
To answer your question, yes you can make a ground Polly and place it using something like EZ-Scenery. I have done that for small parking lots ect. Use the FS9 game pack and render it to .mdl and add that to your bgl via library maker. I do have Metrix all though I have not used it much as it's a new tool for me.

Washington State is a great state. I grew up in Spokane, WA and it's a
little dryer than the west side of the state.

Thanks for looking at the small preview. It has been a long project for me as I have been learning as I go but its been great fun. I took a look at your preview and I gotta say it looks great. Look forward to seeing more pictures.

Hi Donald,

Yeah - seems like we are in the same boat - this is my first time through any of this for me - so I know about the steep learning curve... Since I know my way around modeling and texturing - I've been spending months on the parts I didn't know - specifically getting the photo tiles right and autogen loaded... I placed around 10,000 trees using Annotator on my tiles... Previously - I spent a long time with SBuilder before I realized it was impossible to use Autogen on SBuilder photo tiles - so then I started over again with Resampler... I looked at your area on Google - while substantially drier than mine - you have a vast housing tracts that would probably benefit from autogen... I also noted that HUGE railyard - LOL - as someone coming from MSTS - I would be really tempted to try to do something special with that - animated train perhaps ??? While I am far from an expert on any of this - I am focused on FS9 and I'll gladly try to help out if you are working on anything I've covered so far... Just ping me... Looking forward to more PIX...
:)

Regards,
Scott

Hey Scott,
I did think of doing something for the rail yard but that might need to be an update for a later time. You mention auto gen, I must say I haven't looked into that as I have had so many things on the table. This airport has been about a year in the making and I need to get closer to a release date. One thing that kept me from releasing earlier was that I did not want to infringe on any copyrights. I have completely re-textured my airport using textures from pictures that I took and/or royalty free textures. That has taken about five months to complete since I had to search for textures and make them and they had to be a certain style or color etc.
Plus I had to stay focused on production with everything that was to be in the airport. But I am back on track and hope to have a completed airport soon and get it released. I have really put a lot of features in the airport and most all of them on the list have been achieved. Now I am trying to create an ILS for runway 21R-3L, but the animation of the ball is to slow and I can't find much, if any articles on that subject. If you have done that, I could use some help with that. I will be posting some new pictures soon.

Hi Donald,

A-men brother - LOL - if you ever stop to think just how much work you have left to do - you'll start having panic attacks in the middle of the night...
:)

It's funny - you start someting and think to yourself - oh yeah - let me just improve this airport a little here and there - the next thing you know you're up to your neck in a project of epic proportions... It's like quicksand... I've got way less buildings to build than you and at my speed - I can probably knock out two a week - working on it every night... I hand draw most of it - but - there are plenty of free textures out there for some of the details... I then hand shadow and shade... I've got more than six months tied up and I'm on my 6th custom model... Most of my time up until now was devoted to the - photo tiles - seasonal textures - custom mesh - and - autogen...

Sorry - can't help you with the glide slope - good luck - looking good...

Scott

Looks good! Out of curiosity, how did you pick Pasco? I did my first solo X-country there for my private certificate back in '05.

Hi Ibanez737,

I chose Pasco WA to do my first project v1 v1.1 and now version 2 Tri-cities airport has alot of character and alot of unique buildings such as the fire house Viper aircraft the old navel air station also, I am from Spokane WA and I always liked to fly there in the Sim and felt like it was long over due that Pasco was done plus it's just a great field.

Hi Donald,

What kind of door do you need ? Need a sketch or something - right ? You mentioned PSP - this has a number of tools to make a pretty decent door from scratch... Your best friend in PSP are the 3D Effects... Inner and Outer Bevel... This gives you the ability to make any 2D drawing look 3D by adding depth... I'm amazed at some of the results I've been able to get with them.... A couple other tips - never use a solid color on anything - in real life light always makes highlights and shadows... Gradients do wonders - I almost always apply a black to clear gradient over the top of my base - then adjust transparency effect - then hit the base surface with various lighten/darken brushes - and - add a bit of Gaussian Noise - just because I think it looks a little better in the sim....

Scott

Cool! I know one of the test pilots of the Viper aircraft; he was a professor at CWU. Not a bad gig, hehe!

Oddly enough my first solo XC was to Pasco also. Few years earlier though, that was in 1985 :) . They had a big airshow there so I did the XC and took in the airshow in one whack. I remember drooling all over a pristine AT-6 Texan that somebody restored and brought to the show. I think I still have some old 35mm photos from the airshow around here somewhere.

hey, Scott

The door was on the fire house witch, I posted a picture I had asked my wife witch knows psp alot better than I do and she gave it a go and came out with a excellent version from the picture i showed her. she has showed me quit a bit with psp as i did all my taxi sign textures with it but until you had mentioned doing textures like doors free hand I hadent thought of that. so we gave that a try it turned out great. I do believe she gave it a beveled look and added a little noise which gave it a very realistic 3d look. also I did manage to get the ball on my ILS to run down the poles at a faster rate now I am going through and re-rendering things to turn of crash detection as I for got to do that but all is going good.
