FS2004 PORTUGAL VFR - The ultimate complete scenery for Portugal! (Cancelled)

Hey everyone!
I am currently adding photoreal bridges to the scenery and they really give the area a realistic feel!
I haven't counted (because I'm still finding more models to use) but I reckon the project will have around 30-40 real model bridges around the country ;)

And now as usual some pictures; and if you want to check how close to the real thing they look, just google the bridge name:

PonteMarechalCarmona.PNG
Marechal Carmona bridge next to the city of Vila Franca de Xira

PonteSalgueiroMaia.PNG
Salgueiro Maia bridge, part of the southern portion of motorway A13, next to the city of Santarém. Santarém's airfield is visible in the middle left (runway threshold near left start of the bridge).

PonteEdgarCardoso.PNG
Edgar Cardoso bridge next to the city of Figueira da Foz, known for having Europe's biggest beach by area!

I shall post again when I have another relevant update!

Hello everyone!

It has been quite a while since my last update on this project; unfortunately this was due to having had to almost stop progress on it due to both personal and professional life 'getting in the way'.
I have resumed work these past couple of days, but for the time being my time is somewhat limited so I'll be making much slower progress than before until I can get more free time again.
Nevertheless I have added quite a few more photoreal or otherwise realistic bridge models around the country!
In this update I'll show you all 6 bridges across the Douro river in the city of Porto (Portugal's 2nd largest):

PORTO1.PNG
Ponte do Freixo - Road bridge part of highway A20 (São João bridge in the background)

PORTO2.PNG
Closest to farthest: São João railroad bridge; Maria Pia bridge (unused old railroad bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel), Infante road bridge & D Luis bridge which is currently used both as a pedestrian crossing (on its 2 decks) and as a crossing for the Metro do Porto (on the top deck)

PORTO3.PNG
Same 4 bridges as the above picture but in reverse order (note D Luis bridge's 2 decks)

PORTO4.PNG
Arrábida bridge (part of A1 motorway) just before the mouth of the Douro onto the Atlantic Ocean

I am currently still dding some more bridge models in various parts of the country. After this I shall proceed to start working on the airfields.

As always I'll post again when I have a relevant update!

Hello!

So I have finished adding all custom model bridges around the country! In total there are 17 individual bridges represented (some in more detail than others, remember that I don't make the models myself!), as well as 20 highway & motorway viaducts/bridges in deep valleys or river crossings represented with 5 different generic models. Obstacle warning lights have also been added for those bridges that represent a flying hazard, including the default scenery 25 de Abril bridge which contained none.

And now some pictures as usual ;)

Vila Real.PNG
Corgo Viaduct or Vila Real bridge - 2nd highest bridge in Europe (after Milau viaduct in France) and one of the 50~ highest in the world that takes the A4 motorway across the deep Corgo river valley near the city of Vila Real.
Vila Real aerodrome (ICAO: LPVR) is visible just below the top right corner next to the motorway.

Lamego.PNG
Motorway A24 viaduct across the Douro river near the town Peso da Régua, followed by a shorter viaduct right after which crosses the Corgo river valley, right before it empties into the Douro river.
Corgo Viaduct from the previous picture is visible in the distance to the North.

Next up is bringing to life the various ports, harbours and marinas around the country, as well as rivers and lakes not covered by the water runway sceneries, with ship & boats objects, buildings and general port infrastructure.
After that I'm proceeding to create all the airfields!

Next post after a relevant update ;)

Hey everyone!

I know it's been quite a while since my last update on the project's development, almost 4 months!! But if any of you thought the project died, don't worry it's still very much alive; I've just been extremely busy these past months with life in general, but that didn't stop me from doing lots of stuff for the project!
In all this time I converted & compiled library objects of some categories of models I'll be using on Portugal VFR (churches & lighthouses for example), which will make my workflow and installation for all of you much easier!
I've also learned how to model and texture with skecthup (by means of creating many of the lighthouse models, some of which you will be able to see below!), so you can expect a good amount of models (essentially castles and some fortresses) being originally created by me, instead of all of them being from 3rd parties as I mentioned on the first post here.

Scenery-wise (which I know is what you guys want to see :p ) here's what's been done since last time: I recreated the biggest powerplants Portugal has, as they make for good VFR references, including smoke, burner tower & steam effects created by me! They are 6 Solar farms, 13 coal/gas/biomass powerplants, and the country's 2 refineries!
Some pictures/exampels below:

solar.PNG
2 Solar Farms near the town of Ferreira do Alentejo

Sines.PNG
Coal powerplant near the very important port town of Sines (MSFS default Sines LPSI airfield in the background)

Sines2.PNG
The country's biggest refinery (2 seperate areas) near the town of Sines

Pego.PNG
Pego coal/gas powerplant near the town of Abrantes, 1 of the biggest in Portugal and 1 of 2 examples that have 'Nuclear powerplant style' cooling towers!

Now for the latest development, here are pictures of some of the Lighthouse models I will be using, some from 3rd parties, some created by me from scratch, and some created by me with use of parts/pieces from 3rd parties! :)
Someof these lighthouses are placed inside or on coastal fortresses built in the 16th-18th centuries, which are also modeled and will be included in the lighthouses objects library instead of the Castles & fortresses library.
Also I have managed to create some light effects that will simulate the lighthouse beams at night (a total of 11)! As such, all lighthouses in the project WILL be lighted (something which was undecided as of the 1st post), and with a combination of colours/light period that are at least in some way similar to the real thing (creating a genuine lightbeam faithful to each individual lighthouse's operation just proved far beyond my capabilities, and I believe even impossible for some of them without at least using multiple effects due to FS9's fx limitations..)
Some of all the 42 lighthouses are represented in a mix of photoreal/basic artificial textures, while others are simply 'artificially' textured.

Farol VRSA.PNG
Vila Real de Santo Antonio's lighthouse (mostly photoreal) - my creation with heavy use of 3rd party components

FarolBugio.PNG
Bugio's lighthouse on the entry of Lisbon's harbour (sandbar is photoreal, lighthouse is textured) - from 3rd party

FarolCaboRoca.PNG
Cabo da Roca lighthouse, on the westernmost tip of continental Europe (mix of photo & textures) - my creation with some 3rd party components

FarolForteCavalo.PNG
Forte (fortress) do Cavalo lighthouse, near the beach town of Sesimbra (fortress walls are photoreal, rest is textured) - my creation with lighthouse as 3rd party component

FarolViana.PNG
Fortress of Santiago da Barra, on Viana do Castelo's harbour entrance (no photoreal). A 16th century fortress originally built to protect the city's harbour, which now houses the region's tourist center & a large congress center, as well as being a tourist attraction in general. It is also the site of 1 of 2 lighthouses that guide ships into the harbour - my creation with lighthouse as 3rd party component

Hope you all enjoy the developments, and as always, I'll bring more updates as they come, and I promise It won't take me another 4 months to bring you the next! :p

I´m Eager to try it :D!! a Part of my Family is from Viana :D so the Fortress is very familiar to me together with that lighthouse :D!!
Keep up the great work :)!!

Cheers!!

It's quite interesting to see how your skills grow and grow. Nice project.

Thank you!

Yes I've been having as much fun developing the project as I have had learning about object/model creation and editing! My skills are obviously still just the most basic, but considering I knew nothing about object development before starting this project I guess that's something! :)

Hello everyone!

So another update; I have finished adding all Lighthouses to the scenery, pictures of some of them can be seen below ;)
I have also finished "re-landclassing" a big chunk of the Portuguese territory, adding more towns to the scenery, as well as changing the LC of some towns from the previous one assigned in Portugal Terrain 'PTT' (where a very grid like and 'square' type of town LC was used) to a more realistic, non-grid like LC, reflecting the reality of urban sprawl you usually see around Portuguese and European towns in general.
Some rural areas were also extensively edited, such as the center mountains, which are heavily pine-forested (and were less so with PTT's original LC), and other mountain ranges. On the other hand other areas which were incorrectly heavily forested were also somewhat 'de-forested'.
Next up I believe I will be bringing the ports & marinas to life, with ships, boats and general harbour infrastructure such as loading cranes, warehouses and containers!

And now some pictures of a few of the lighthouses:

FarolInsua.PNG
Ínsua island on the Minho river estuary (Portuguese/Spanish northern border) has a small lighthouse (more of a beacon really) built on the walls of a 16th century Fortress, which contains the ruins of a 14th century Convent inside it. The town of Caminha and my latest addition to the Seaplane bases (Foz do Minho) with water landing area are visible in the background.

FarolLeca.PNG
Leça da Palmeira lighthouse with Matosinhos refinery in the background, north of the city of Porto and near Fransico Sa Carneiro Intl Apt (LPPR).

FarolMondego.PNG
Cabo Mondego lighthouse located north of the city of Figueira da Foz, itself visible in the background.

FarolNazare.PNG
Ponta da Nazare lighthouse, located on a 16th century fortress atop a rocky outcropping north of the town of Nazaré. There is a famous picture/video of surfer Gareth McNamara surfing (at the time) a record breaking 100ft wave in which this fortress and lighthouse can be seen ;)

FarolRoca.PNG FaroisNoite.PNG
Cabo da Roca lighthouse. Located on continental Europe's westernmost point. The second picture is of the same lighthouse at night (from a different angle) on which you can see the light effect of this lighthouse! Cabo Raso's lighthouse light can also be seen to the far right in the distance.
All 42 lighthouses in the project have light effects emulating the best I could actual the lighthouses light's colors/times, with 15 different light effects being used.

FarolRaso.PNG
Cabo Raso lighthouse, on the Guincho dunes area, near the 'chic' town of Cascais.

FarolEspichel.PNG
Cabo Espichel lighthouse

FarolSaoVicente.PNG
Cabo São Vicente lighthouse, located on continental Europe's Southwestern most point. It was an old monastery converted for use as a fortress in the 1800's, and for use as a lighthouse in the early 20th century.

More posts when I have some more news/updates as always!

Hey everyone!

Small update here just to show that you can expect the quality of the final product to be improved from what I originally anticipated it would be, due to my learning of 3D modelling! :D

While revamping (and finally finishing for good!!) the water aerodrome sceneries, I decided to have a go at modelling a medieval Knights Templar tower that is a big part of the scenery in one of these water aerodromes, which I had previously showcased in an earlier post: Dornes Tower of course!

Below you can see that not only did I create the tower from scratch with photoreal textures, but the church model was also revamped, as well as having added lots of small houses (including some of my own creations, typical schist wall houses!) to populate the village more faithfully to the real thing! You can draw comparisons from the pictures of the previous post regarding this area ;)

Dornes2.PNG

And now back to work on the ports and harbours!

Hey Everyone!

It's been a while without an update (again...!), but I had to take a break from developing scenery this past month to study for my last theory exam (which I passed so yay me!). Also once I had time again, I decided to 'wash my eyes' and work on something different before resuming work on PTVFR, which came in the form of my new scenery for the Pitcairn Islands!

But now I'm back on this, and have a few snapshots to share with you all ;)
The harbours & ports are still on the way, though about half are done; but since I was getting bored with them (its tedious work copying & pasting ships and boats objects all around o_O ), I also started working on the airfields, beginning with the biggest, the military bases! Now bear in mind that this pertains to AFCAD work only, so you won't see any buildings on those I'm showing you, but that's essentially all that remains to have them complete! :)

And now the good stuff:

Aveiro.PNG
Aveiro Port with 'Praia da Barra' in the foreground. Default scenery runway for LPAV (São Jacinto Aerodrome) visible in left corner.

Viana.PNG
Viana do Castelo Port with city in the background. Santiago da Barra fortress (model shown in a previous post) can be seen in the center.

Lisboa_1.PNG Lisboa_2.PNG
Lisbon port & Water aerodrome as seen from the middle of the Tagus estuary. New Vasco da Gama bridge & Vasco da Gama Tower models used, as the ones included in PTT Portugal Terrain gave me all sorts of texture & terrain loading issues around the Lisbon area. You can also see the Vasco da Gama mall with residential towers São Rafael & São Gabriel, the Oriente train station, Atlantic Pavilion (now the Altice Arena), the Lisbon Oceanarium, Portugal Pavilion, the Science Pavilion & the FIL (Lisbon International Fair).

Lisboa_4.PNG
Lisbon viewed from the mouth of the Tagus river, with landmarks such as Belém Tower, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (my own model creation!) & the Electricity Museum on the left.
The landmarks shown in these pictures were already included in the port files due to their proximity to the shore, but rest assured many more are to come in the Lisbon area!

Lisboa_Alfeite.PNG
Base Naval do Alfeite (Lisbon Naval Station). The home base and main infrastructure of the Portuguese Navy, located immediately South of Lisbon next to the city of Almada.

And now some aerial views of 4 military bases/airfields I have made AFCADs for. Once again keep in mind that buildings/objects are still missing in these!

LPMR.PNG
Monte Real AB (LPMR)

LPOV.PNG
Ovar Military Aerodrome (LPOV)

LPST.PNG
Sintra AB (LPST)

LPOT.PNG
Ota AB (LPOT). This is the sole military airfield of Portugal missing from FS2004 default scenery, probably due to its decommissioned status in the early 00's.

I hope you enjoyed this update! As usual I'll post again when I have a new relevant update, and I promise I'll try to be more consistent now that I'm through with exams for good! :)

And now back to work for me!

Hello everyone, and happy new year!

I realise it's been 5 months since there last was an update on this project, but rest assured its still alive! I had to take a break from it both for IRL reasons and for the sake of variety of my free time (this is a huge project to be undertaking just by myself haha).
My progress has been scattered along various areas of the scenery, the last of which was the creation of 2 Castle models, the first I've done so far unless of course you count the sentry tower I shared in a previous post! I am happy to say that I've become somewhat proficient at making stuff with SketchUp, not too complex models, but enough so that my end result of these castles was more than satisfying for me :) , and considering I'm still missing 60+ castles, me being able to model them is a solution to a problem I had since the beginning of this endeavor!

And now for a few pictures as usual!

CasteloMontalegre.PNG
SketchUp model of Montalegre Castle in northern Portugal. An aerial drone picture of the real thing is below:
Castelo-Aerea2.jpg

Marvão Castle & its respective Walled town, one of the most spectacularly preserved and located medieval towns in Portugal, in the Alentejo region near the border with Spain. This model took me 3 full work days to make, and I'm very proud of it :D There's not much detail on the town's houses & walls for both time-saving (and my mental sanity saving!) reasons and to keep model simplicity & low to no impact on performance! The Castle area is somewhat detailed though!
CasteloMarvao.PNG
And an aerial picture of the real thing:
Marvão 3.jpg

That's all I got for you today, and though I'll be slowly progressing I'll be sure to try to give more frequent updates and not disappear for another half-year :rotfl:

Hello everyone!

I realize it's been almost 5 months again since my last update, but I have made progress on some areas, namely I've finished creating AFCAD and ground polygon files for ~80% of all airfields (buildings and scenery objects only remaining for those), as well as a few heliports!
I have also made and added a few more castles, of which pictures will follow at the bottom.
The reason it took me so long to post news again was that I kept steadily working on this project until end March, when I suddenly stopped due to 'burning out' on it essentially o_O ; all the 'staying at home' and depressing outlook for real world aviation didn't help to motivate me either, and I ended up veering to other hobbies for these past 2 months. But I've recently got back at it! I won't keep promising that the next update won't come in a long time again , but I do intend to keep frequent updates as long as I have something relevant to show! :)

And now pics as usual!

Hello again!
Just bringing a small update that I forgot to mention in the previous post.
In addition to all the scenery files, I intend to include official aeronautical charts from Portuguese AIP & VFR Manual for those airfields & heliports that have them, in the scenery package; however and since these comprise less than 25% of the total number of airfields, I decided to make my own fictional charts for the majority of the smaller ones, including for all Seaplane Bases, and Military bases for which there aren't public charts available (which means all of them except LPBJ due to its status as a joint Civil/Military airport). I might do a few for some major Heliports too but most of these are so small and simple that they hardly justify having a whole document dedicated to them :D

Here is a Beta version of LP8D, aka Dornes Seaplane Base, which has been heavily showcased in this thread :)

lp8d1.PNG lp8d2.PNG lp8d3.PNG lp8d4.PNG

The format is heavily inspired by the Portuguese AIP charts, and has info in both Portuguese & English, as well as distances in Imperial & Metric units. The approach chart's terrain will be 'sourced' from OpenStreetMap and the Aerodrome chart will be an edited view of the AFD in ADE. In this picture the view is from AFX, but I'm in the process of converting all my AFX files into ADE (which I already used to place objects) so that I can not only minimize the # of software used, but also the amount of files for the scenery in the end!

Hope you enjoyed this idea and like the look of the charts! Now back to scenery making for me
