• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Runways Lights

I am currently experimenting with some runway lights but have run out of ideas.

I was using SCASM lights since they are hardcoded in the FS engine and the LIGHT_NAV option doesn't display the lights from far away.

What kind of lights do you all use? Effects or BGL?

Thanks, Ryan

In my opinion runway lights compiled with SCASM have a more easily placement and control, altough they are a really old legacy from fs2002 scenery engine...

BGL_LIGHT (LIGHT_NAV, _BEACON and so on) are optimal as lights for taxiways and anti-collision on buildings.

But i'm interested on what effects can do, cause i never experimented with them. Maybe someone can enlight us...:)

I agree, I was also looking into effects too bit have not found a reliable tutorial yet. Is there a good tutorial for airports for windows, or whatever program you use for SCASM lights?

Thanks, Ryan

The last version of Instant Scenery has a function for placing "rows" of objects. That to me was the solution for placing runway lights perfectly straight as well as fences or any other consecutive object you might need, it allows you to deside the distance between them.....

Well how far away is "far away?" I've flown past large airports at night from 4000ft in a cessna, and you can barely tell that the airport is there. It is nothing like FSX displays. In fact, the way that you can tell that it's there is from seeing the terminals lit up and because it's less lighted than the surrounding area. You go from major city (Raleigh, NC & Greensboro, NC) with tons of lights, to where its kind of darker and then you can barely make out the runway lights. What I'm saying is that you don't really have to have it so bright, like the FSX default portrays. :)

SCASM Lights work welll, however they don't work great in FSX.

I am interested in the runway lights used to SMF by David.

I might be a bit off here, but I made rwy/txi lights for FS9 a few yeasrs ago. I made two sets to use - 1. ON at dusk til dawn, 2. On by radio control. The idea was you are coming home from a corporate meeting to your own private airport. On approach you tune your radio to a certain freq, and bingo your lights come on like when you open the frig.. door. :)

One would place these with IS. I made red white and blue lights. It worked great. Many downloads..... BUT- I could never get them bright enough. You could see them, but you'd always wish they could be a bit brighter.

I've tried to find the answer to this. As I understand, flightsim makes the lights very, very large when seen far away (say- a few miles- on approach). They make the lights smaller and smaller as you get closer. This keeps the brightness the same.

This is only what I have heard. It may be true or not. Anyway- at this date no one has been able to tell me how to make those lights brighter. Many tricks have been tried.... with many effects.... no change.

If anyone has the answer- let us in on it. Bob
