• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Small request Part 2

Hi Arno,

Again on material templates. How I love that feature!

OK about the request now, would it be possible to have an option called:

' Create template from current material '

This would save the time going in the template editor and cloning all the properties.

Not sure how popular the material template is with others, but it might be of use :p

Hi Emilios,

That is a nice idea. But would you include all properties from the material? That would make little sense as a template (because than all materials would become the same). So the problem with this request is to choose which properties to include and which not.

But maybe I can initialize the material properties in the template editor to an existing material and then you only have to select which ones you want in the template.

Yes, that's a good question.

Initialization of the editor using the current material's properties is a very good starting point I think.

Then, the user can possibly have an option to

-select 'all' and confirm a template identical to the current material. Actually this is quite useful because it is a nice way to ensure identical material properties on separate MDL files across a library. Except the texture names of course. So you could perhaps have 'select all' but leave out texture maps/names
or
-'tick off' those not essential for the template. This in case you want just a 'template'

Almost like what you said :)

Hi,

Your exception already helps, I could also initialize it to a specific material except the texture names. That would make more sense.

Agree. I m more than sure you ll find the best way to implement this.

I dont know how good it would be if you complicate the options any further though. I think that simply creating a template from the existing material (-textures) and leaving the option to remove individual material properties should be enough?

I m glad it sounds like a useful addition :)

I think that should indeed be the easiest approach. I'll check what I can implement.

Hi,

I have added this function now. Next to the New button in the template editor there is an dropdown box now. That will show all your existing materials and if you click on any of them a new template is created based on that material.

Let me know if it works well for you,

Works just great. Nice idea to have the drop-down menu to choose the source material ;)

As a general note, it would really be great if the template layout was not alphabetically sorted, but instead it would match that of the main material editor. but this is just fine as it is :)

Thanks again!

Hi,

I can probably change that sorting quite easily, let me check. I think it is just an option to have them either grouped or alphabetically.

Hi,

I miss understood, you meant for the template list, instead of the material you select from. That is not so easy to change the display. So I'll keep it like this for now :).

Indeed, this is what i meant but it's just fine as it is :)
More than enough!

thanks!
