• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Smoke & steam effects issue [SOLVED]

Hello!

I'm currently recreating the thermo-electric powerplants that exist in Portugal for my project 'Portugal VFR', and it is my first time adding effects in scenery design (I have only added various engine startup smoke effects to flyable aircraft before).
So far I've built several of these powerplants and added smoke effects coming out of their chimneys, and even flame effects on the the country's refinery gas flare towers; so far all have worked out nice and load up in FS9 without a problem.
My problem arose now, as I've built one of the largest powerplants, which contains cooling towers (like those in nuclear powerplants), that you can usually see expelling steam from their tops. I added the smoke effects to the chimneys of the plant and it was all good, until I proceeded to add steam effects to the first cooling tower; but due to the fact that FS9's fx_steam.fx is quite small and simple, I decided to add some 50~ steam effects all crammed together to render a believable steam 'cloud' worthy of a cooling tower and not just a bathroom sauna
By doing this, I got a satisfactory steam stack on the cooling tower, BUT the smoke effects on most of the chimneys seem to have been reduced for some reason! :banghead:
I used to have a continuous somewhat thick smoke stack coming out of them, but after adding the steam effects I just get irregular smoke puffs coming out of most of them...
I've tried restarting the sim and recompiling the obj & fx bgl, no joy... By erasing all the steam effects I get my smoke stacks back again though!

So I just want to know if this is normal with FS9 (due to having many effects in the same small area :scratchch ) or if it may be a problem of mine alone (and therefore hopefully fixable ).

I added some pictures to help you visualize my problem:

Picture of another powerplant and refinery where you can see nice continuous smoke stacks and flame stacks:

Picture of the powerplant where I have the problem. Notice I have a nice steam stack on the cooling tower, but irregular smoke stacks on most of the chimneys; the leftmost chimney barely lets out any smoke as you can see!

Thank you!

Btw, do you have any idea if the issue could be due to there being too many effects triggering at the same time or should that not be an issue?

It is possible for that to occur if too many Effects and/or Emitters / Particles per Effect ...are used in a local area.

The second image above appears to be the result of multiple Effects being used in a local area to create coverage of the larger cooling tower.

It would be preferable to 'scale' a single smaller Effect for a larger scenery object, rather than to place multiple Effects.

Hey Gary!

Well it took me a while to get the hang of editing fx files but once I did I created a neat large steam stack perfect for what I wanted :D I attached a picture for reference/comparison.
Also just having 1 effect per tower instead of 50+ really fixed the issue with the smoke on the chimneys :)

So thank you once more for introducing me to yet another great scenery making tool and helping me out once again!

Cheers!

Looking good !

PS: Many thanks to Arno for making his interactive, visual preview enabled utility available for work with legacy format (ex: FS2004) Effect *.FX files, and for FSX / P3D 'standard' format Effect files as an alternative to the SDK Special Effect Tool. :wizard:
