Sounds and range as a funnel

Good day everyone,

I'm looking at developing a simple scenery for FSX/prepar for SAR (search and rescue) mission which involves homing on emergency beacon using aural method (triangulating centre point). I looked at different topics on this forum, it looks like it is possible to define exact position of the emitter and sound range of the WAV file, but it's not of use for radio signals propagation, as they form a funnel shape. In essence, I need to define specific ranges for set of altitude ranges when WAV file will be heard, i.e. small range at low altitudes and large range at high altitude.

Is it at all possible to develop such effect using the standard tools and frameworks? As a side question, is it possible to apply fade in-out feature to the sound when entering/leaving sound range?
