• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Start point heading error

Hi all,

Has anyone tried placing the aircraft at a start point - as defined in the BGL data.

Using data extracted using BGLANALYZE.EXE I can use my program to place the aircraft at the start point defined in the BGL data.

BUT.

The aircraft heading is usually a few degrees off - maybe up to 3 degrees.
Sometimes its bang on - but usually there is a small but significant error.

If I then use the 'Goto Airport' menu option to place the aircraft at what should be the same start point it ends up on the correct heading - straight down the runway.

YES I AM APPLYING MAGNECTIC VARIATION CORRECTLY TO THE TRUE HEADING GIVEN IN THE BGL STARTPOINT DATA.

Sorry to shout but this is not a case of not apply magnectic variation correctly - I have tried in locations all over the globe with mag var values large and small - and I always end up no more than 3 degress out on the heading - but it is still not correct - but the 'Goto Airport' start point is !
Is FS applying someother correction to the heading that I don't know about (compass deviation ?).

Anybody tried this had similar results ?

Really tearing my hair out.

Be grateful for any input on this...

Rob

I did a quick try :
- setting variables PLANE LATITUDE, PLANE LONGITUDE and PLANE HEADING DEGREES TRUE, all with degrees units and double precision data;
- using start point coordinates and heading obtained with scruffyduck's SDE, with 6 decimals;
- don't bothering with magnetic variation.

And the result was pretty accurate. So the error is somewhere else. Maybe a degrees-radians conversion error (using 3.14 instead of 3.1415926...)

Thanks for the quick response.

I changed from using 'PLANE HEADING DEGREES MAGNETIC' to set the heading (and applying the Mag. Var. for the airport) to using 'PLANE HEADING DEGREES TRUE' directly and that works exactly correctly - straight down the runway.

Many thanks for getting my brain moving in a different direction.

Rob.
