• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I downloaded a simple game that uses OpenGL, some sort of star tour game. The game would not run on my rig, the OpenGL components were not there to run it and it crashes before it can play.

I purchased Aerofly FS, got the CDs in the mail, loaded it, and also, it would not run due to OpenGL components not in the GC 'hardware'. I have the latest drivers, which the game uses 2.1 and 3.0 is the highest (I believe) but even people with 2.1 drivers 'do not have' the latest 'components' that run the game which are OpenGL based, so the game will not work for them.

I was not alone with others in the Aerofly FSX forum that also could not run the game. The sim, Aerofly, also has an Apple version which will thus run in Linux as well.

The game looks very stable in YouTube movies, so the new shaders and OpenGL gaming technologies must really run nicely. But for those of us with 3 year old GC's, its a land that is purchased via a good GC. For me, an updated GC for the Apple is around $500.00 (very rare, exotic, small square GC, an ATI 8800 with a long set of copper cooling tubes and small AC unit to cool them).

Oh to find a cheap 8800 somewhere that works fine. arrgh...

Oh to simply be able to run games smoothly....

If you read the mac portion of the game requirements, it says " As fast as NVIDIA 9400" as the minimum. Don't know if you noticed this but given that you where talking about the 8800, the 9400 is newer than the 8800, so perhaps, even if you got the 8800, it wouldn't work.

I highly recommend building a pc. Apple is very uptight about their products. Not good for gaming at all.

As I recall, the second number of an nvidia card is the one to care about. If you look at the specs, an 8800 will leave a 9400 behind. Probably have more luck finding a 9800 that an 8800. I have an 8800 in my second rig, but it's not going anywhere.

Bill, are you sure eveything got updated in your OS reinstall?

Exactly.
I'm pretty sure you'll get more "bang for the buck" having your PC configured and built by the local computer nerd shop than with Apple.

The newest Ubuntu release apparently comes quite close to OSX in terms of look and feel, so you won't miss much if you decide to switch to a PC.

Hey Bob,

I am pretty sure. Full latest BootCamp which has all drivers for XP 32, and all updates for Windows XP.

Thanks for the heads up on the 9800. All I need (I believe) is the small square version GC. I believe those cooling lines screw on, so I can trade out just the card. I believe also the card is a Notebook card.


Delta Romeo and Heretic, when people knock my computer, I love it all the more. Knock some more, I love it even more and more. I am an Apple guy and thats it. (Alienware also, but Apple is preference of primary choice).

apple or alienware it doesnt really matter, as hardware wise its pretty much exactly the same stuff, its the OS and price tag that make it different :)

Not really, it'd be like comparing a BMW to a TATA that used BMW engines, steering and suspension. The latest Macs are using Intel processors and nVidia graphics cards just like a PC from Dell or Asus, there's literally no difference in the components just the box it comes in and the OS they put on it.

Hey, I only said that the "bang for buck" ratio of a normal PC is better!
