• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.

Volumetric Grass Conversion

Hi Arno,

I am currently using MCX to export my 3D grass through the Ground Poly Wizard as specified in this thread and the tutorial Tic made (which I can't seem to locate). What I have noticed is that when I import my .X or .MDL file that has been exported from 3DSMax, the Ground Poly Wizard automatically removes the other ~15 layers. As a result, the exported product (even with the correct options selected) is just a single layer of dots rather than the full grass that I was hoping for.

However, if I export it through the "Convert and Place" wizard, it works perfectly, with the two main exceptions that it seems to be displaced about a foot or so to the south of where it is intended to be. In addition, (the bigger problem) it begins to flicker from a longer distance, which has forced me to resort to the Ground Poly method.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm not familiar with the work flow Tic describes in the tutorial. But the GPW by default removes polygons that are not on the ground. There is an option you can uncheck to change this.

Correct, but it appears that those polys are being filtered out automatically before unchecking this box (because this box is checked by default). At that point, regardless of the checkbox, the polys are no longer there to even have the chance of being exported.

This is what it looks like when I load the file directly into MCX just using the 'Import' Button. As you can see, the multiple layers for grass are certainly there.

However, when the same file is loaded into the GPW, only one layer remains.

Hi,

Yes, that checkbox must be checked/unchecked before the model is loaded. So just select your file again after changing it to force a reload of the model.

...and that's why you are the best, Arno. :teacher:

Sometimes, I begin to doubt myself.

Thank you!
