What is the best method to make the windows in a building show light coming through?

I am thinking perhaps the only method is to give the glass window panes emission. Or can something be added so that the windows appear to have light shining through them onto the ground outside the building. My scenery object has been created using Blender and has many many windows.

And if the glass material I used for my windows has emission added will any objects in front of the glass prevent the emission showing eg the 'cross bar' of the window which is in 'front' of the glass?

What is the best method.

Thanks.
