• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Why does this file size increase on export?

Hi
Does anyone know why the FSX aircraft mdl file increases in size when exported?
For example - if I import the default B737-800 aircraft mdl file (5,633KB) - make no changes and then export, the aircraft mdl file increases in size to 6267KB. An increase happens to any aircraft mdl file that I try. Just wondered if there is a setting to change. I use the default MCX settings.

Hi,

ModelConverterX will not guarantee that the file stays exactly the same. On importing the model is stored in an internal memory representation in the tool. And when exporting the tool makes a MDL file out of that representation again.

During that process the structure of the model is changed (optimized most of the time).

Besides that ModelConverterX does not support all features of MDL files. So for example skin and bone animations will be ignored.

So in most cases you will get a smaller file. If I import the default 737 and export it again I do get a file that is smaller as well. It was 5633 kB and is 5578 kB afterwards.

Thanks for the explanation Arno.
Is there a setting I need to change because my aircraft mdl's always increase in size!

Hi,

No, there is no specific setting for this.

Are you working with FS2004 or FSX? I tested with FSX and FSX MDL files. Maybe for FS2004 it is slightly different.

Hi,

Are you using the latest development release or the stable 1.3 version?

For the DC-3 it goes from 6493 to 5555 kb here on my machine.

Ok George - that's interesting - any chance you can let me know your option settings please?

Thanks George
Arno - I've no idea why this is happening - anything I should check? - I'm using the latest SDK (SP2).
