• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Back to autogen detection for buildings

I remember asking a few years ago about the possibility of using the “Texture filter editor” to be able to detect buildings, as well as vegetation. I even remember giving it a go, but I had limited success. I have been working on a new project and have laid out over 3000 building polygons using QGIS software as the area I am working on has no shapefile data (or at least a free version). Even though the FSX results are great, after using Scenproc to generate autogen from the QGIS data, the process of actually laying out the polygons in QGIS is so time consuming and it gets to the point where I start to see small rectangular boxes when I close my eyes! So I decided to go back to the texture filter editor to do this job instead for my next project. I have learnt a bit more over the years on how to get better results and managed to generate every building for an area on St Thomas (some 500) in just under 45 minutes after some BMP texture editing. However, one thing I have noticed with the autogen produced is that they are all facing north/south and don’t align to the photoscenery, even though the footprint made on my BMP is often not facing N/S. So a few questions:

1) Why is this so?

2) Is there any way to align a polygon to the angle you want?

3) Has there been any more development in trying to perfect this method?

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

Are you using a recent scenProc version? Older versions had not optimization for the detected features and that would give north/south aligned buildings. But that's fixed by now.

I'm working on detecting buildings in a project now as well, so that might result in some chance in scenProc if needed.

Hi Arno,

Yes, I am using the latest release. To be fair, I have only made a basic test to see if it I could get buildings to appear, to which they did. I was just a little puzzled as to why they were all north/south. I think I will play with it a little more first and then maybe get back to you if it is still not working. Thanks!

Hey Arno, just to let you know, I played around with the BMP image a bit more and got the eventual shape files to match the aligned photo scenery. It seems my detection footprints just needed a bit of help. So it works as you say! I'm excited by the prospect of your new project with this topic. I believe nailing this down really will open up to easier scenery building! Thanks.
